NorthEast United rope in Sehnaj Singh on two-year deal

The midfielder was a part of SC East Bengal’s squad last season in the ISL.

Northeast United FC have completed the signing of 28-year-old defensive midfielder Sehnaj Singh from SC East Bengal on a two-year deal, Khel Now can confirm. “Northeast United have signed Sehnaj on a two-year deal. It’s a done deal,” sources close to the developments told Khel Now.

Sehnaj Singh’s ISL Career

Sehnaj was drafted to play for Delhi Dynamos FC for the second edition of the ISL in 2015. He scored one goal in 10 appearances for the Dynamos before moving out on loan to Mumbai City FC.

In 2017, he secured a permanent move to the Islanders and was a part of their squad until 2019. There, he turned up to play a total of 40 league games. The following season, he joined forces with ATK FC and was a part of their title-winning squad, featuring in eight matches. And last season, he signed a contract with ISL debutants SC East Bengal where he got to play just six matches.

His football Journey

Sehnaj has come through the ranks of Gurdaspur Football Academy and the renowned Chandigarh Football Academy. In the I-league, the 28-year-old has featured for the Indian Arrows, Mohun Bagan where he won the title in the 2014-15 season. In 2016, he joined Kolkata giants East Bengal before returning back to the Green and Maroons in 2017.

On the international stage, the defensive midfielder’s debut dates back to October 31, 2011, for the U-19 Blue Tigers against Turkmenistan in the AFC U19 Cup qualifiers. He was called up by former national team coach Stephen Constantine in 2015 for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Oman and Guam.

Sehnaj made his debut for the Indian National team in a 1-2 loss to Oman and registered his second cap against Guam. The midfielder has made 157 career appearances in total and has scored seven goals for 11 clubs.

Northeast United FC’s preparations

The Highlanders have kickstarted their work behind the scenes and have roped in a few quality players. They have roped in Spanish midfielder Hernan Santana and have extended Khassa Camara’s contract as reported earlier by Khel Now. The club has also signed Joe Zoherliana, Jestin George, Mohammed Irshad and Mathias Coureur.

Khalid Jamil will become the first Indian head coach to take over the hot seat of an ISL club as he will lead the Highlanders into the 2021-22 season.
