SC East Bengal appoint Manuel Diaz as head coach, part ways with Robbie Fowler

Diaz has an overall win rate of 41.77 percent and has coached in over 320 matches.

Indian Super League (ISL) outfit SC East Bengal, on Wednesday evening confirmed that they have agreed with Robbie Fowler to terminate his head coach contract by mutual consent. Spanish tactician Manuel ‘Manolo’ Diaz has replaced the former Liverpool FC forward at the Kolkata club.

"Alongside his assistant Tony Grant, Robbie Fowler took charge of the team in a very challenging period of transition. He managed to overcome significant odds to bring the fans some joy in the club’s first ever ISL season. Everyone at SC East Bengal would like to wish him all the best with his future endeavours and look forward to his continued association with Shree Cement Limited," the club's official statement read. He originally signed a two-year deal with them, prior to the start of the 2020-21 season.

The Red and Gold Brigade announced his exit late on Wednesday. They then followed it up with the official confirmation on Manuel Diaz's signing. "SC East Bengal is proud to welcome Manuel ‘Manolo’ Diaz as our new head coach," they wrote on social media.

With over 20 years of coaching experience including a significant period of time in the Real Madrid setup, Manuel Diaz brings with him a wealth of experience and a winning mentality.

The 53-year old has an overall win rate of 41.77 percent over 328 matches coached in his two-decades-long career. He also has a 46.66 win rate in his latest stint at Real Madrid Castilla (2018-19). “In Madrid, we say 'Winning is in our DNA'. We love the pressure and expectation that comes with coaching a big club,” Manolo said after signing his contract with the Kolkata giants.

He further added: “Time is short and there is a long and difficult road ahead. But we will do our best to deliver good performances for all SC East Bengal fans.”
