The midfielder plied his trade in Indian shores for three seasons.
Former Jamshedpur FC & Kerala Blasters midfielder Sergio Cidoncha has left the Indian Super League to sign for Spain’s Gimnástica Segoviana CF, a club which plays in the fourth-tier. He had spent three seasons in the ISL, before opting to go back to his homeland.
Sergio Cidoncha was unfortunately marred by a serious injury to his ankle while playing for Kerala Blasters in the 2020-21 season, which forced him off the pitch for a long time. “Kerala Blasters can confirm that Sergio Cidoncha has sustained a high-grade ligament tear on both sides of his right ankle, during the goalless draw against Chennaiyin FC, on Sunday, November 29,” the club’s sporting director Karolis Skinkys had said.
This setback meant he could not help the southerners in the previous season when they finished in 10th spot in the standings. Regardless, Cidoncha earned a lot of plaudits for his display in the league and became a fan favourite in Kochi.
Introduction to the Indian Super League
The midfielder came to the ISL after signing for Jamsehdpur FC ahead of the 2018/19 season. He was very impressive in his first season for the Men of Steel.
The Spaniard made 13 appearances in his first season, scoring four goals and providing three assists in the process. He attracted a lot of attention from other ISL clubs due to his instant impact.
Time with Kerala Blasters
He shifted base to Kerala Blasters in the season that followed and the club decided to retain him for the 2020/21 season. Sergio Cidoncha played 16 times for the Yellow Army, scoring two goals and making three assists. He was particularly impressive during the 2020/21 season before his injury. In 236 minutes, he scored a goal and maintained a passing accuracy of over 78%.
He was an important player in Kibu Vicuna’s squad but the club is looking to change it’s fortunes from forthcoming season onwards.
Under newly appointed head coach Ivan Vukomanovic, the club have signed Adrián Luna and Enes Spiovic among others in preparation of the eighth edition of the ISL.
