The midfielder was one of the best performers for the Red and Gold Brigade in the previous campaign.
SC East Bengal midfielder Matti Steinmann is all set to join A-League outfit Brisbane Roar, Khel Now understands. The German was one of the Kolkata giants' standout performer in the last season, however, the tussle between investors Shree Cement and club officials have resulted in him deciding to mutually terminate his contract.
The 26-year-old defensive midfielder has prior experience of playing in the A-League. He was a regular name on Wellington Phoenix's team sheet, before joining SC East Bengal in the 2020-21 season.
Matti Steinman had two more years left on his contract with Wellington when a mutual termination paved the way for his move to India. However, a season later, his time to India has come to an end with him joining Brisbane Roar in Australia.
"Matti has penned in a two years deal with Brisbane Roar in the A-League. He had one more year of contract at East Bengal but looking at the current situations and considering the offers on the table he has decided to make his way back to Australia," a source close to the development further confirmed Khel Now.
The source also confirmed that a top ISL club also showed interest in signing the German, but fell short on time against Brisbane Roar.
With four goals and three assists in 17 matches, Matti Steinmann was one of the few standout players for East bengal in their debut season in the ISL. It is yet to see how the Kolkata giants replace him ahead of the next season.
