There will also be double headers on weekends.
The upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 season will have Thursday to Sunday matchdays. The competition will begin on 7th October, in Kochi with Kerala Blasters locking horns with East Bengal in the season opener. Also, the weekends will remain witness to a double headers (two matches on the same day). Weekend double headers are slowly turning into a tradition in the ISL with last season also having the same.
The fixtures of the ISL 2022-23 season are expected to be out soon. For the last two seasons, the Indian football fraternity remained witness to ATK Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters battling in the inaugural encounter. For a change, this time East Bengal will be replacing ATK Mohun Bagan in the encounter.
Last season
The ISL 2021-22 season produced some scintillating action. Since 2020, after the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, the competition was staged behind closed doors. Consequently, the matches were played across venues in Goa. This season will mark the return of the home and away format, the one which used to happen prior to the pandemic.
The previous season gave Indian football new champions! Jamshedpur FC, a club that came into existence in 2017, won the ISL Winners' Shield for the first time. Hyderabad FC, who entered the scene in 2019, won the ISL Trophy. Notably, Bartholomew Ogbeche won the Golden Boot after scoring 18 goals in 20 matches. Kolkata giants East Bengal, however, had a disappointing season, yet again. They managed to salvage just a single victory and ended the season at the bottom of the table with 11 points.

There were certain mind-boggling transfers as well. In December, to everyone's surprise, Juan Ferrando shifted base from FC Goa to ATK Mohun Bagan after the latter parted ways with Antonio Lopez Habas. Daniel Chima Chukwu, who failed to deliver at East Bengal joined Jamshedpur FC in January and played an integral role in the side's Shield-winning triumph. The most unfortunate incident of all was Kerala Blasters losing out in the grand finale, for the third time since their inception!
