ISL 2024-25: All six foreigners of Mumbai City FC
The Islanders have roped in three new foreign signings for the upcoming ISL season.
As August begins, excitement is building for the new Indian Super League (ISL) season set to kickoff soon. Every club has been active in the transfer market, securing players to strengthen their squad.
However, there’s a special anticipation surrounding the foreign players and their potential impact in the upcoming season. With Mumbai City FC signing three newcomers to join their existing trio of foreign players, this article will take a closer look at all the foreigners who have joined the Islanders for the new season that is about to commence.
Mumbai City FC Foreigners List
Tiri – Spain
The Spanish international’s debut season for Mumbai City FC was a dream come true. He surpassed the expectations of every Mumbai City fan.
He became one of Petr Kratky’s most trusted men and his stats speak for themselves. In 23 appearances, he recorded five clean-sheets, 29 interceptions, 11 tackles won and 77 duels won, with a passing accuracy of 79%.
With the new season starting soon, all eyes will be on him to see how he partners with his fellow Mumbai City FC defenders, especially Thaer Krouma, who has yet to unlock his potential within the squad fully.
Thaer Krouma – Syria
Another centre-back who joined the Mumbai City FC squad midway through last season was Syrian national team player Thaer Krouma. Since his arrival, Krouma has become a key player for the Islanders, bolstering the team with his crucial play and contributions. In his short time in the ISL, the experienced defender played 13 games, making eight interceptions, 48 recoveries and six blocks.
The 34-year-old Syrian was instrumental in Mumbai City’s successful 2023-24 season, which culminated in their ISL title victory over Mohun Bagan SG with a 3-1 win in the final. But, to be completely honest, he still has much to prove to the fans and earn their trust. However, Petr Kratky’s confidence in him is evident and let’s see how he performs in the upcoming season.
Yoell van Nieff – Netherlands
Before diving deep, one thing that deserves applause is how Van Nieff never let comparisons with former Mumbai player Ahmed Jahouh trouble him. Infact, to everyone’s surprise, he quickly adapted to the Mumbai City FC squad and became a fan-favourite in a short span.
Since the Dutchman’s arrival, he has scored a goal, provided two assists, completed 723 successful passes and achieved a passing accuracy of 83%. These numbers speak highly of his performance. The question now is how he will fare without Apuia alongside him in the 2024-25 season?
Jeremy Manzorro – France
One name that has been prominent in the Indian football landscape since 2023 is Jeremy Manzorro. Looking at his performance last season, Manzorro made 24 appearances, scoring six goals and providing two assists during the 2023-24 campaign.
He is renowned for his precise passes and free kicks, notably scoring back-to-back 30-yard strikes against Punjab FC and a dramatic 97th-minute free-kick winner against East Bengal. Known for his silky footwork, creative flair and diverse passing range, it will be exciting to see what Manzorro brings to the Islanders’ squad.
Jon Toral – Spain
Another Spanish player who joined the Islanders this season is Jon Toral. The attacking midfielder arrived with high expectations and understandably so. He has played in some of the top international leagues and has competed alongside and against some of the most talented football players from around the globe.
Throughout his career, Toral has made 275 appearances across various leagues and teams. Known for his silky touches and creative flair, he has registered 35 assists and scored 46 goals. Standing tall at 6 feet, Toral is a constant threat in the penalty box, adept at scoring with both his feet and head. With so much buzz and anticipation, it will be exciting to see what he has in store for the fans.
Nikolaos Karelis – Greece
With the departure of Jorge Pereyra Diaz, Iker Guarrotxena, and Jakub Vojtus, the Islanders needed to secure a forward who could consistently pose a threat in the 18-yard box. It seems they have found a suitable replacement in Karelis, the Greek forward.
The 32-year-old has also made his mark in the UEFA Europa League group stages, featuring for both Panathinaikos and Genk, and scoring four goals in 12 appearances. Over the course of his club career, which spans 361 games, Karelis has been known for his all-around game and contributions in the final third, with 103 goals and 29 assists. However, we’ll have to wait and see how Nikolaos fares for the Islanders in the upcoming season.
