Punjab FC have learned the lessons from their past campaign and made some strategic inclusions.

Punjab FC has undergone significant changes in preparation for the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) season.  The club has made key adjustments to its foreign player roster, bringing in fresh talent to bolster their squad. After parting ways with coach Staikos Vergetis, Punjab FC appointed Greek tactician Panagiotis Dilmperis to guide the team.

Understanding the competitive dynamics of the ISL after their first season, the club has strategically targeted foreign signings to upgrade their squad significantly.

Punjab FC Foreigners List

Ivan Novosolec – Croatia

Ivan Novosolec is one of Punjab FC’s standout signings. The  29-year-old Croatian defender is coming off a successful spell with FC Istiklol Dushanbe in Tajikistan, Novosolec brings with him a wealth of experience. His time at Istiklol was marked by domestic league success and valuable exposure on the continental stage, including appearances in the AFC Champions League (ACL) group stages, where he faced top Asian clubs like Al Nassr, featuring Cristiano Ronaldo.

Known for his physicality, tactical awareness, and ability to read the game, Novosolec will be the Minister of Punjab FC’s defense. His experience in high-pressure matches will be invaluable as the team aims to make a mark in the ISL.

Filip Mrzljak – Croatia

Another Croatian, Filip Mrzljak, joined Ivan in Punjab FC’s ranks. The versatile 31-year-old midfielder arrives from HNK Gorica, a top-tier Croatian club where he served as captain. Mrzljak showcased his leadership and flexibility during the recently concluded Durand Cup, underlining his ability to adapt to different roles on the field. His skill set ranges from defensive duties to initiating attacking plays, making him a key component in midfield.

However, Mrzljak’s fitness is a concern as he has had a history of injuries that have hampered his playing time in the past. Should he manage to stay fit, his presence could significantly impact Punjab FC’s performance in the long run.

3. Ezequiel Vidal – Argentina

Ezequiel Vidal is among the five new foreign players signed by Punjab FC this season. The Argentine attacking midfielder has previously played in Asia, representing Indonesian club Persita Tangerang, where he made a mark by scoring 17 goals over two seasons.

A creative playmaker with an eye for goal, Vidal’s ability to break down defenses and contribute with both goals and assists makes him a significant threat in the attacking third. Punjab FC will be looking to him to add dynamism and creativity to their midfield.

Asmir Muljic – Bosnia and Herzengovia

Asmir Muljic, a Bosnian winger, joins Punjab FC after stints with various clubs in Bosnia, Israel, and Kazakhstan, most recently with Bosnian side Velez Mostar. At 33, Muljic brings plenty of experience but also a history of unfulfilled potential. Despite playing for numerous clubs, he has struggled to cement his place in any squad and has yet to score double-digit goals in a single season.

Nevertheless, Punjab FC might have identified untapped potential in Muljic’s pace and dribbling skills. He will be expected to provide width and directness to their attack, contributing to creating chances for his teammates.

Mushaga Bakenga – Norway

Norwegian forward Mushaga Bakenga is another key addition to Punjab FC’s attack. The 32-year-old striker arrives after a successful season with Cypriot club Apollon Limassol, where he scored eight goals in 19 games. Bakenga is known for his predatory instincts inside the box, a classic “fox in the box” striker who thrives on finishing chances.

His sharp movements and positioning make him a constant threat to opposition defenses. Punjab FC will rely on his finishing ability to convert opportunities into goals, which is crucial for their success in a league as competitive as the ISL.

Luka Majcen – Slovenia

Luka Majcen is the only foreign player Punjab FC has retained from last season. The Slovenian striker was the team’s top scorer and captain in the previous campaign, showcasing his goal-scoring prowess and leadership qualities. His familiarity with the league and the team’s dynamics makes him a pivotal figure in Punjab’s squad.

As the focal point of their attack, Majcen will look to build on his performances from last year, leading the line with hopes of achieving even greater success for both himself and the team this season.
