The defensive midfielder will now stay with the Kolkata giants till the end of the 2022-23 season.
Carl McHugh has extended his contract at ATK Mohun Bagan. The defensive midfielder’s contract was about to end in May 2022. But now, the Irishman has decided to extend his stay at the club till May 2023. The club are expected to announce his signature soon.
“Carl McHugh has renewed his contract with ATK Mohun Bagan till 2023,” a source close to the developments informed Khel Now. Carl McHugh has been an integral part of ATK Mohun Bagan and previously ATK. Both Antonio Lopez Habas and now Juan Ferrando have kept their faith upon the 29-year-old. Moreover, he has tasted Indian Super League success once during his four-year stay at the country. Last year, in July, ATK Mohun Bagan extended McHugh’s contract till May, 2022.
The midfielder joined ATK way back in June, 2019. That season he won the ISL trophy with ATK. The next season, he joined ATK Mohun Bagan and performed extremely well. He appeared 39 times for the Mariners in the ISL and played four matches last year in the AFC Cup as well. In 2020/21, he registered two assists to his name. Despite being a central defensive midfielder, McHugh has also been used as a centre-back on a few occasions. His steadiness, hard work and work-rate on the pitch may be a few of the reasons for the club to add another year to his contract.
Carl McHugh has played for clubs like Motherwell, Plymouth, Bradford, Dundalk FC and the junior teams of Reading. The Irishman also has a total of 12 appearances for the Republic of Ireland’s U-21, U-19 and U-17 sides.
