The midfielder's current deal was set to run out at the end of the season.
India midfielder Anirudh Thapa has signed a contract extension with Chennaiyin FC, Khel Now can confirm. The creative ace has agreed terms on a new two-year deal with the Marina Machans. The deal will keep him at the club until the end of the 2023-24 season. His current contract was set to run out at the end of the ongoing campaign.
“Anirudh Thapa has signed a new two-year deal with Chennaiyin FC. He holds the club and its fans in high regard for what they have done for his career and wishes to remain loyal with the outfit after what has been a difficult last couple of seasons,” a source close to the developments informed Khel Now.
Background
The 24-year-old initially joined the club way back in 2016. He has played a total of 86 matches for Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League. As mentioned above, Thapa has wished to stay loyal to his club. There was speculation of the midfielder leaving Chennaiyin at the end of the season. However, that has now been to put to bed.
Thapa's loyalty can be considered to be a repayment of what the club have done for him. The outfit stood by him during the tough phases in his career, mainly owing to injuries he suffered in some seasons.
This campaign hasn't been one to brag about for the Chennaiyin skipper, who hasn't been in the best of form. However, the club had no hesitation in retaining the two-time AIFF Player of the Year.
In December, 2016, after the conclusion of the ISL season, Thapa joined Minerva Punjab and played 14 matches for the club in the I-League. He also scored one goal for the Warriors.
Speaking of international numbers, Thapa has played 24 matches for the country and has netted 2 goals so far in his career.
