Who are the top five all-time fan-favourites at Mumbai City?
These players left a lasting impression on the club and remain adored by the Islanders faithful.
Mumbai City have boasted some of the biggest players on their roster. These stars helped them become a formidable unit in the ISL and with their performances, shaped the club's reputation. International stars like Diego Forlan and Nicolas Anelka only brought more excitement for the fans, while domestic players in the squad fed off their wealth of experience and European pedigree.
For the past seven years, many players have come and gone at Mumbai City. But, some of them have left a lasting impression on the club, so much so that they're still popular among the club's fanbase. On that note, here are the top five fan-favourites of Mumbai City.
5. Krisztian Vadocz
Although his first stint in the ISL came with Pune City in 2014, Krisztian Vadocz enjoyed more popularity during his time with Mumbai City in 2016. A versatile Hungarian midfielder with 40 international caps under his belt, Vadocz earned a reputation for his fiery, energetic brand of football that helped the Islanders storm into the semi-finals.
With 14 appearances for the Islanders, the former Osasuna and Alaves player was a mainstay throughout the season. He also scored thrice for the club. Hong Kong side Kitchee SC were espied by his top performances and signed him soon after.
4. Alexandre Guimaraes
Alexandre Guimaraes was the head coach of Mumbai City for two years. However, the Costa Rican was a huge success during his first year at the club. He helped the Islanders finish top of the table in the league phase and led them to the semi-finals.
Even though Mumbai City lost steam in the following year, coming only seventh in end-season standings, Guimaraes is still a respected figure at the club.
3. Lucian Goian
Lucian Goian was the first player to play in three consecutive seasons for Mumbai City. A centre-back by trade, the Romanian's defensive nous transformed the side into a mean outfit, affirming his status as the best in his position at the time.
Goian's leadership skills saw him assume the captaincy in 2017. Additionally, he also held the record for most tackles with 246 during his three-year tenure with the Islanders. His stellar reputation earned him a move to rival side Chennaiyin FC in 2019, but he remains a popular figure among the Mumbai City faithful.
2. Amrinder Singh
Amrinder Singh is Mumbai City's leading appearance-maker with 84 games under his belt. A constant figure between the poles since 2016, the goalkeeper kept five clean-sheets from six games in his first season and only improved thereafter.
Bolstered by the Golden Glove award, Singh continued to make prolific saves, which includes a league-high of 66 in the 2018-19 season alone. He later made his foray into the Indian football team as well. Singh was at the heart of Mumbai City's recent ISL triumph too, etching his name forever in the club's folklore.
1. Diego Forlan
Diego Forlan was the envy of every ISL team when he joined Mumbai City in 2016. A prolific journeyman who played for top European sides like Manchester United, Inter Milan and Villarreal, the Uruguayan's cameo in the Indian top flight was a dream come true for the sport's ardent fans in the country.
He played an instrumental role in guiding the Islanders to the semi-finals that season, scoring five goals in 11 appearances. His impressive haul included a hat-trick against Kerala Blasters. Even though Forlan was sent off in his last appearance for the club, the 41-year old remains adored by Mumbai City supporters.
