The Japanese plied his trade for Italian club Benevento Calcio previously.
Japanese mdfielder Cy Goddard is set to join Mumbai City FC on a loan deal from Serie A club Benevento Calcio. In a statement released recently, the Italians announced, “Benevento Calcio announces that it has temporarily transferred the rights to the sports performances of the footballer Cy Goddard to Mumbai City FC.”
The 23-year-old midfielder is a product of the Tottenham Hotspur academy. He had joined Spurs as a 9-year-old and was associated with the club until 2018. Goddard made 16 appearances for them in the first division of Premier League 2 in 2016-17. He later signed a three-year deal that lasts until 2021 with the Italian side. In the 2018-19 campaign in Serie B he played twice for the first-team.
Last September, Cy Goddard was loaned out to top division Cypriot club Pafos FC. He turned out in six matches in the previous season. Goddard’s last match was against Doxa Katokopias FC in March this year. He is born to an English father and grew up in London. However, the midfielder has represented Japan at youth levels.
With this move, the Islanders have added significant depth to their midfield. They already have the services of the likes of Rowllin Borges, Ahmed Jahouh, Raynier Fernandes and Sourav Das. Furthermore, Bartholomew Ogbeche is expected to lead the forward line for the team.

It is interesting to note that Benevento Calcio had gained promotion to Serie A for the 2020-21 campaign. Hence, they might have looked to offload a few players from their roster. Cy Goddard will be playing for Sergio Lobera’s team in the last year of his contract with the Italian club. It will be fascinating to see if Mumbai City FC pursue to sign him permanently, depending upon his performances during the loan stint.
