ISL: Raynier Fernandes extends contract with Mumbai City till 2023
The 24-year-old joined the club from his hometown in 2018.
Mumbai City FC have announced that midfielder Raynier Fernandes has signed a three-year contract extension that will see him stay with the Islanders until May 2023. After moving to his hometown club from Mohun Bagan in 2018, the midfielder has cemented himself as a firm fan-favourite. He's made 34 appearances over the course of the last two seasons, scoring three goals and notching three assists as well.
The midfielder expressed his delight at putting pen to paper and spoke glowingly about the people at the club. Raynier Fernandes said, “This is my home. I am grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to play for my city and now to stay on for the coming years and prove myself. I’ve been fortunate to learn so much and be surrounded by fantastic people here. I believe we have a lot more to achieve and I hope we can create some great memories together here at Mumbai City.”
The 24-year-old offers an industrious presence in the middle of the park, is energetic and a tidy passer of the ball, which makes him a key member of the squad. His steady performances also earned him a call-up for India, as he made his debut under Igor Stimac in the 3-1 defeat to Curacao in the King's Cup opener.
Bimal Parekh, the co-owner of the club expressed the confidence the club has in the midfielder and talked about his special connection with the fans.
“Raynier represents an important part of the fabric of the club. He has his best years ahead of him and we’re confident he can go on to become a very important player, not just for Mumbai City but for the Indian team as well. He’s at one with the fans, with the badge and with the values of the club. We’re delighted to have Raynier with us.”
