Who is Ismail Elfath?

Ismail Elfath was born in Morocco in 1982. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 18 after winning the U.S. Diversity Immigrant Visa lottery.
Beyond his refereeing career, Elfath holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. All while balancing his career as the Chief Revenue Officer at Brightfin. He received his international FIFA badge in 2016.
Elfath originally decided to pursue refereeing after a local match. He was tackled roughly from behind as a player, ultimately being sent off for his reactions. He snatched the card out of the referee’s hand, giving him the motivation to consider the role.
He has since taken charge of massive footballing fixtures, including the MLS Cup final in 2022, the CONCACAF Champions Cup final in 2026, and several World Cup matches.
Ismail Elfath’s World Cup Record
By officiating the England vs Argentina game, Ismail Elfath will be managing his seventh career game as a head referee at the FIFA World Cup. His tournament debut came in the 2022 edition in Qatar.
He managed three 2022 matches. It included a memorable moment when he famously shook hands with Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar before sending him off for removing his shirt to celebrate a winning goal against Brazil.
He finished that tournament serving as the fourth official for the iconic World Cup final between Argentina and France. In the FIFA World Cup 2026, he has refereed three matches before the semi-final.
His first game was the 2-2 group stage draw between Japan and the Netherlands. He then took charge of Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay, before overseeing Norway’s historic 2-1 win against Brazil in the Round of 16.
