American official Ismail Elfath is confirmed to officiate the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final clash between England and Argentina. He will be managing his fourth game of the 2026 tournament, cementing his stature as one of the most trusted North American referees.

Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins will be his assistants for the game. The American trio has worked together across major high-profile matches. Including the CONCACAF Champions Cup Final 2026, Leagues Cup Final 2023, MLS Cup Final 2022, as well as games at the World Cup.

The match marks a massive feat for the North American refereeing community. Iván Barton was appointed for the clash between France and Spain. It represents the first time in history that two CONCACAF referees have been selected to officiate both World Cup semi-final encounters.

Ismail Elfath has managed three games so far in the 2026 edition. His appointment has raised massive controversy, with the American referee considered the “lucky charm” for Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi. Messi boasts a 100% win record when Ismail Elfath was part of the officiating crew.

Who is Ismail Elfath?

Ismail Elfath was born in Morocco in 1982. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 18 after winning the U.S. Diversity Immigrant Visa lottery.

Beyond his refereeing career, Elfath holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. All while balancing his career as the Chief Revenue Officer at Brightfin. He received his international FIFA badge in 2016.

Elfath originally decided to pursue refereeing after a local match. He was tackled roughly from behind as a player, ultimately being sent off for his reactions. He snatched the card out of the referee’s hand, giving him the motivation to consider the role.

He has since taken charge of massive footballing fixtures, including the MLS Cup final in 2022, the CONCACAF Champions Cup final in 2026, and several World Cup matches.

Ismail Elfath’s World Cup Record

By officiating the England vs Argentina game, Ismail Elfath will be managing his seventh career game as a head referee at the FIFA World Cup. His tournament debut came in the 2022 edition in Qatar.

He managed three 2022 matches. It included a memorable moment when he famously shook hands with Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar before sending him off for removing his shirt to celebrate a winning goal against Brazil.

He finished that tournament serving as the fourth official for the iconic World Cup final between Argentina and France. In the FIFA World Cup 2026, he has refereed three matches before the semi-final.

His first game was the 2-2 group stage draw between Japan and the Netherlands. He then took charge of Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay, before overseeing Norway’s historic 2-1 win against Brazil in the Round of 16.
