Jose Mourinho warned Vinicius Jr that leaving Real Madrid was “not worth” it after successfully persuading the Brazilian to stay.
The 26-year-old was in the penultimate year of his contract at the Bernabeu, which meant he could depart for free next summer.
Premier League champions Arsenal were made aware of the potential of acquiring one of the world’s best wingers. Contract discussions progressed, but Vinicius Jr finally committed his fate to Real earlier this month, signing a six-year deal.

Jose Mourinho, 63, who announced his return to Real Madrid for a second spell in command in June, discussed his role in retaining the Brazilian international at the club.
Mourinho stated on the Spanish television show El Chiringuito:
“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid. The only thing I told him was: Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.”
“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling.”
Real Madrid won’t have to worry about Vinicius Jr for another six years. The Brazilian signed a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2032.
He is now preparing for the new season under manager Jose Mourinho, who will be looking to deliver silverware this campaign after two trophyless seasons.
