Julián Álvarez is currently tied for 3rd place in the all-time FIFA World Cup goalscoring charts.

Argentina forward Julián Álvarez announced himself on the biggest stage during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, playing a key role in Argentina’s run to the title. The striker finished the tournament with four goals in seven appearances, ending as Argentina’s second-highest scorer behind Lionel Messi.

Álvarez began the tournament as a substitute but soon displaced Lautaro Martínez in Argentina‘s starting lineup by the third group-stage match against Poland. His performances in the knockout rounds proved particularly important as Lionel Scaloni’s side lifted their third World Cup title.

On this note, let’s look at all five goals scored by Julián Álvarez in FIFA World Cup history.

Goal 2: Argentina 2-1 Australia

Álvarez scored his second goal against Australia in the Round of 16 after capitalising on a mistake from goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.

The striker dispossessed Ryan inside the penalty area before slotting into an empty net in the 57th minute to put Argentina 2-0 ahead in the contest. Argentina eventually progressed with a 2-1 victory.

Goal 3: Argentina 3-0 Croatia

In the semi-final match against Croatia in Lusail Stadium, Álvarez delivered one of the most impressive performances of the tournament.

The first goal was scored in the 39th minute from a direct run from inside his own half when he put the ball past the defence after a pass from Lionel Messi. With Messi opening the score, the goal doubled Argentina’s lead.

Goal 4: Argentina 3-0 Croatia

The forward completed his brace in the 69th minute of the same game. Messi outflanked Josko Gvardiol with his right foot before he sliced the ball back to Álvarez for a long-range finish.

The goal earned Argentina a place in the World Cup final, where they went on to defeat France on penalties to claim the World Cup.
