Messi is currently the joint top scorer in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Many believe Lionel Messi to be the best of all time. He currently has the most goals in FIFA World Cup history. He scored his 17th and 18th goals in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria.
Then he added another against Jordan with a superb free kick from outside the box, his 19th in the competition. Now it’s only a matter of how many more he’ll add to his total this tournament.
In the knockout rounds, France’s Kylian Mbappé moved up to second place on the all-time list. Messi maintains a slender lead.
Kylian Mbappe is firmly on Lionel Messi’s heels as both players chase a new record in World Cup scoring. However, the Frenchman is more focused on lifting the trophy in New York on July 19 than on becoming a top goalscorer.

The 27-year-old scored twice when Les Bleus defeated Sweden 3-0 in the round of 32 on Tuesday. It brings him one goal shy of Messi’s World Cup record of 19 goals. Messi currently jointly leads the scoring charts in this edition with Mbappe, with six goals.
“I am not looking at the top scorer rankings… also, I am convinced that Leo Messi will score even more goals. I don’t focus too much on that. I’m more focused on the opponents we might face and how close we’re getting to our goal: the final.”
Messi’s Argentina will face Cape Verde in the round of 32 on Friday. France will compete against Paraguay in the round of 16 for the quarter-final spot.
