Kylian Mbappé has 11 goal contributions in the current edition.

Kylian Mbappé has established himself as one of the most clinical strikers in modern football, cementing his legacy at club and international levels. For France, Kylian Mbappé has undoubtedly been the nation’s best player, instrumental in their last major tournament appearances, including a historic World Cup victory in 2018.

The France national football team entered the competition with the massive task of reclaiming their title, aiming to become world champions for the third time in their history. Kylian Mbappé’s role in France’s run so far has been instrumental.

He had a brilliant tournament, managing a goal or an assist in every match so far. Kylian Mbappé started with exceptional braces against Senegal and Iraq, before delivering two assists against Norway, with France finishing as group leaders.

He carried this incredible form in the knockout rounds, netting a brace against Sweden in the Round of 32, to win 3-0. Kylian Mbappé converted a penalty against Paraguay to guide the side to a narrow 1-0 win. He then scored and assisted against Morocco to win 2-0 in the quarterfinals to confirm the nation’s third consecutive semi-final appearance.

This has set up France for a highly anticipated World Cup clash against Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026, with both nations playing on July 15 at the Dallas Stadium in Texas, USA.

1. 2018: France 1-0 Belgium

France returned to make an appearance in the World Cup semi-finals after 12 years, facing Belgium’s “golden generation”. Kylian Mbappé, who participated in the tournament as a teenager, had already cemented his position in the starting squad and, with the player ultilizing his explosive pace on the right wing, kept Belgium under constant pressure.

While Samuel Umtiti scored the match-winning goal from a corner, Mbappé’s role in the game cannot be understated, as France made it to the finals, ultimately securing the nation’s second World Cup title, after their victory in 1998.

2. 2022: France 2-0 Morocco

Kylian Mbappé produced an incredible performance against Morocco, who had a fairytale run, becoming the first African nation to reach the World Cup semi-final. He was up against a compact and defensive Moroccan side, while he was closely marked by his former teammate Achraf Hakimi throughout the game.

In the 79th minute, with France holding a narrow one-goal lead, Mbappé collects the ball on the edge of the box, moving past three Moroccan defenders in a crowded penalty box before unleashing a deflected shot. The ball rebounded straight onto Randal Kolo Muani, who netted an easy goal to complete a comfortable 2-0 win, as France confirmed their spot in their second consecutive final.
