Top 10 goalscorers of La Liga 2021-22
Some of the veterans of the league feature in the list.
The La Liga 2021-22 season has concluded, as Real Madrid won their second title in three years. There wasn’t much of a title race this time around. Real finished the season 13 points ahead of second-placed FC Barcelona.
A total of 951 goals were scored in 380 matches throughout the season. Here is a look at the top goalscorers of the season.
10. Memphis Depay - 12 goals
Memphis Depay joined FC Barcelona from Olympique Lyon ahead of this season. This signing turned out to be a fruitful one, as the forward was the highest scorer for Barcelona. Memphis scored 12 goals, one more than January signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. His goals helped FC Barcelona finish second in the table, behind champions Real Madrid.
9. Angel Correa - 12 goals
Tied with Depay on 12 goals is Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa. This was the Argentinean’s best season in terms of goal scoring.
He scored in Atletico’s first game of the season as well as the last game of the season. His goalscoring however dried down towards the end of the season.
8. Jose Luis Morales - 13 goals
Jose Luis Morales equalled his tally of 13 league goals from 2020-21 in 2021-22 as well. Apart from his 13 goals, the winger also provided seven assists. Morales scored both the goals in Levante’s 2-0 win against Champions League semi-finalists Villarreal.
However, despite his best efforts, he couldn’t stop Levante from getting relegated. Levante finished 19th in the league table with 35 points.
7. Joselu - 14 goals
The recently concluded season of La Liga turned out to be the best of Joselu’s career in terms of goals scored. The Spaniard scored 14 goals and was further provided four assists.
Joselu has been in good form since his return to La Liga, hitting double figures in all three seasons. His goals weren’t enough though, as Depotivo Alaves were relegated after finishing 20th in the league table.
6. Enes Unal - 16 goals
Compared to the season before, Enes Unal had a much better output this time around. The Turk scored 16 goals throughout the season, the most in a single season in his La Liga career.
He scored a brace against Atletico Madrid and also scored the only goal in Getafe’s 1-0 win against eventual champions Real Madrid. His goals were very impactful in saving Getafe from being relegated.
5. Juanmi - 16 goals
Tied with Enes on 16 goals is Real Betis’ Juanmi. Juanmi had his best season in Real Betis colours as 2021-22 turned out to be the best season of his career.
He scored the only goal in Real Betis’ 1-0 win against FC Barcelona. Real Betis finished fifth in the La Liga table. Juanmi and Real Betis also won the Copa del Rey.
4. Raul de Tomas - 17 goals
Raul de Tomas picked continued his superb form from the Segunda division in La Liga as well. The former Real Madrid forward and Espanyol marked a brilliant return to the top tier of Spanish football. The striker scored 17 goals helping his team finish 14th in the league table.
3. Vinicius Junior - 17 goals
Despite his goalscoring output reducing from the season prior, Vinicius had a brilliant season overall. The young Brazilian scored 17 goals in the league and further provided 10 assists.
The 21-year-old was a major part of Real Madrid’s dominance in the league and also the Champions League. His hat-trick against Levante can be considered one of the highlights of his season.
2. Iago Aspas - 18 goals
Iago Aspas has been one of the most consistent forwards in La Liga in recent years. The recently concluded one was no exception.
Aspas bettered his goal tally of 14 goals from the previous season by scoring 18 goals in the latest one. On top of that, he also provided six assists. He is Celta Vigo’s primary goalscorer and his goals helped Celta Vigo finish 11th in the league table.
1. Karim Benzema - 27 goals
The winner of the Pichichi trophy in 2021-22 is Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema. Arguably the best forward in the world at the moment, Benzema was absolute fire this season. The competition for the Pichichi trophy was not even close as Benzema with 27 goals was nine goals ahead of second-placed Iago Aspas.
The French international is considered to be the favourite for the Ballon d'Or, having won the double of La Liga and UEFA Champions League.
