LaLiga introduces new rules ahead of 2026-27 season

The Spanish top division will witness many new refereeing decisions.
LaLiga has implemented new refereeing rules for the 2026-27 season. The modifications are intended to eliminate time-wasting, standardise officiating procedures, and address some of the contentious incidents that have occurred on the pitch in previous seasons.
While some of these changes have already been tested at the FIFA World Cup 2026, others update and clarify the rules that were in use in earlier seasons.
It’s worth remembering that all of these regulations are part of a larger set of adjustments authorised by IFAB and tested at the recent World Cup.
All these rules were followed by the referees during the World Cup 2026. Now LaLiga is set to follow these changes during their upcoming season.
What are the new LaLiga rules for the 2026-27 season?
- VAR will be allowed to intervene for the second yellow card, mistaken identity on red cards, and wrongly allowed corners.
- During the substitution, the player coming off should leave the pitch within 10 seconds; otherwise, the replacement will have to wait for 60 seconds.
- Player getting treated will have to remain off the pitch for a minute before returning to the pitch.
- If a goalkeeper halts the game for treatment without being injured from a foul, one of his teammates must go off the pitch for a minute.
- Throw-ins will be timed for a strict five-second countdown.
- If a spot-kick is accidentally kicked twice, the chance taken will be counted as missed as long as it doesn’t end up in the net.
- Referees will now announce their VAR reviews to the crowd, similar to World Cup 2026.

It’s on 15th August between Deportivo Alavés and Getafe CF.
