Lautaro Martínez will look to get over his disappointing display in front of goal at the 2022 World Cup!
Argentina ended their 36-year wait to win the FIFA Worlda Cup in Qatar four years ago. Led by Lionel Scaloni on the touchline and with Lionel Messi as their captain, Argentina won the entire tournament despite losing their opening game 2-1 against Saudi Arabia. La Albiceleste lost World Cup finals in 1990 and 2014, both times against Germany, but got the better of France in 2022 in what we can argue was the greatest football game of all time.
Along with Lionel Messi, Julian Álvarez, Emiliano Martínez, and Enzo Fernández also stepped up for the national team. Lautaro Martínez was crucial for Argentina during the 2021 Copa America, and fans were expecting him to step up during the last World Cup, but due to his ongoing ankle issue and building pressure from the opening game, Lautaro Martínez had one of the worst individual World Cup campaigns of all time. He missed many chances, and his scoring the winning penalty during the shootout against the Netherlands was his only significant contribution to his side’s success.
El Toro bounced back in the following international tournament when he guided Argentina to their second consecutive Copa America win, along with scoring five goals and claiming the golden boot award as well. As Julian Álvarez was recovering from an injury at the time of the commencement of the competition, Lautaro Martínez was given the opportunity to exorcise his demons from four years ago. He has started all three games of Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far, and in this article, we will take a look at Lautaro Martínez’s goals in the competition’s history.

2026 FIFA World Cup – USA
Goal 1: Jordan 1-3 Argentina
Argentina won both of their opening two games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Algeria and Austria. Lionel Messi scored all five goals in these 3-0 and 2-0 wins, respectively. After Argentina’s top spot was secured, Lionel Scaloni decided to rest La Pulga, and Lautaro Martínez was given the responsibility to lead the line against Jordan. After Giovani Lo Celso’s brilliantly struck free kick at the 19th minute mark, Argentina were in a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Lautaro Martínez hit the crossbar, and Leandro Paredes was fouled inside the box when he tried to convert the rebound. After a VAR check, La Albiceleste were awarded a penalty, which was slotted perfectly into the bottom left corner. This striker marked Lautaro Martínez’s inaugural goal in his World Cup career so far.
