For captain Lionel Messi, who was competing on the World Cup stage for the last time, Argentina were vying for the second World Cup trophy in a row.
But when the circumstances following the final whistle tainted Spain’s well-earned triumph, the rest of the Argentina team’s actions were swiftly condemned.

“We know how much it means to them and we know how much it hurts to lose, but there is a way to lose. Too many times we have seen that from Argentina. The reaction after the final whistle is terrible.”
