Ligue 1: Ranking all 20 teams according to their squad values
The French top-division has a lot of glittering players and expensive rosters.
French Ligue 1 is mostly associated in modern times by Paris Saint-Germain’s financial might and their domestic league domination post new ownership. With players like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe that were signed for record transfer amounts, their squad value is obviously through the roof.
However, one look at the rest of the teams exhibits an image that says the league overall has a lot of exciting young players who are worth a lot of money. Therefore, we took a moment to monitor the squad values of all of the 20 clubs involved in French top-flight Ligue 1 and rank them from least valuable to the most.
Here are the French Ligue 1 clubs ranked in terms of their squad values:
20. FC Lorient - €59.93m
Newly promoted club, FC Lorient are the lowest valued team in the Ligue 1 at the moment.
19. Nîmes Olympique - €60.95m
Nimes Olympique are the next team that are valued as among the least expensive teams, and they survived relegation last year by the skin of their teeth.
18. Dijon FCO - €62.68m
Dijon FC finished 16th last season and are one of the least valued teams in the division. Their main objective is to survive yet another season in the top-tier.
17. Stade Brest 29 - €63.53m
Yet another team that often flirts in and around the relegation positions is Stade Brest 29, valued at a measly €63.53m.
16. FC Metz - €63.95m
Two time French Cup and French League Cup winners, FC Metz also have one of the least valuable squads in the division.
15. RC Lens - €65.00m
One-time French league winners and newly promoted team, RC Lens are valued at €65.00m and will look to stay in the Ligue 1 top-tier for the time being.
14. SCO Angers - €74.60m
SCO Angers are valued at €74.60m, a team that are now in their sixth year in the top-flight, impressively staying up with a meagre budget.
13. Stade Reims - €89.55m
Stade Reims are historically a strong team, with six French league titles to their name. Even with their low budget squad, the club finished in sixth place last season, ahead of big hitters like Olympique Lyonnais.
12. AS Saint-Étienne - €90.15m
AS Saint-Etienne are 10-time league winners and are now in their 17th consecutive season in the top-flight.
11. Montpellier HSC - €92.40m
Montpellier HSC last won the league back in the 2011-12 season, and are valued at around €92.40m.
10. FC Girondins Bordeaux - €94.55m
Six-time French Ligue 1 winners, FC Girondins Bordeaux are valued at €94.55m, and will look to improve upon their 12th-place finish last year. Their best players include the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Hatem Ben-Arfa and Josh Maja.
9. RC Strasbourg Alsace - €102.50m
First club to break the €100m ceiling is RC Strasbourg Alsace. The club finished 10th last season and will aim to land a European spot this time around. Their charge will be lead by the likes of Habib Diallo, Ibrahima Sissoko and Lamine Koné.
8. FC Nantes - €102.60m
Eight-time league champions, FC Nantes are also now in their eighth consecutive season in the top-tier of French division football. Three of the best players in their squad include Alban Lafont, Fábio and Moses Simon.
7. OGC Nice - €193.95m
OGC Nice are valued just below the €200m mark at €193.95m. One of their high profile signings this year has been former Manchester United and Everton midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin and he joins the likes of Rony Lopes and Kasper Dolberg in being the highest valued players of the club.
6. Olympique Marseille - €228.45m
Last year’s league runners-up, Olympique Marseille are valued at €228.45m and will look to go one step further this year to snatch the crown of Ligue 1 champions away from PSG. Marseille's squad is graced by the likes of, Steve Mandanda, Yuto Nagatomo and Dimitri Payet.
5. Stade Rennais FC - €240.50m
Stade Rennais FC have been in the top-division for 27 years and feature players like Daniele Rugani, Steven Nzonzi and Eduardo Camavinga, but have never won the league title.
4. LOSC Lille - €255.10m
Four-time league title winners, LOSC Lille are valued at €255.10m and have players like José Fonte, Renato Sanchez and Timothy Weah in their ranks. They will look to improve upon their fourth place finish last season.
3. AS Monaco - €311.70m
Heading into the top three and breaching the €300m mark, AS Monaco are third amongst the clubs with highest squad value in Ligue 1 housing players like Cesc Fàbregas, Kevin Volland and Wissam Ben-Yedder.
2. Olympique Lyon - €339.25m
Seven-time French champions and last year’s UEFA Champions League semi-finalists, Olympique Lyonnais are the second-most valuable team in the French top-division. They have some high-profile players in their squad like Memphis Depay, Lucas Paquetá and Moussa Dembélé.
1. Paris Saint-Germain - €858.75m
Paris Saint-Germain are scores ahead of everyone else in the league in terms of squad value. The club has stars in their roster like Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Marquinhos, Angel Di Maria, Marco Veratti, Keylor Navas and more. Valued at €858.75m, it is no surprise that PSG has dominated the domestic scene due to their financial muscle and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
