Messi’s international career will come to an end on Tuesday night

Lionel Messi will bring down the curtain on his international career for Argentina, appearing in a farewell match against Benin at the Estadio Mas Monumental on Tuesday, October 6. The Argentine skipper will make his 208th appearance for La Albiceleste tonight, concluding one of the greatest international careers of all time.

Ahead of this milestone, Messi has received another feather in his cap. The legendary forward has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Buenos Aires. He has been handed the “Doctor Honoris Causa” title, which is the highest honorary title from the university.

The University of Buenos Aires awarded the honorary title in recognition of his career and achievements, including leading the South American giants to the FIFA World Cup 2022 title in Qatar.

Messi will step out in an Argentine jersey for the last time tonight. He will don a specially made jersey featuring GOAT symbolism and golden lettering. This jersey has been made by Adidas to mark the farewell match.

He will look to cap his final international appearance with a goal. So far, he has scored 125 goals in 207 appearances, making him his nation’s all-time leading goalscorer. In fact, he is the highest goalscorer in South American football history.

He recently took his nation to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, where they suffered a 1-0 loss to Spain. Messi also lost his father, Jorge, a few weeks later. These events contributed to his decision to call time on his international career.
