Lionel Scaloni leads Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals against England.

Argentina entered the FIFA World Cup 2026 as the defending champions. They have responded well to the challenge of retaining their status as world champions. La Albiceleste are currently in the semi-finals, where they are scheduled to face England.

The South American giants have been carried by Lionel Messi’s form. The Inter Miami forward, despite being 39 years old, has been superb in front of goal, netting eight times to lead the Golden Boot race. He also became the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer and assist provider.

However, Messi’s fellow Lionel on the touchlines, Lionel Scaloni, has been equally important to La Albiceleste’s renaissance on the global stage. He has already led his nation to the World Cup title in 2022 and can become only the second head coach in history to win back-to-back World Cups.

Scaloni enjoyed a modest playing career as a right-back. He made 200 appearances for Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna, winning the LaLiga title. He also had spells at West Ham, Racing Santander, Lazio, Mallorca, and Atalanta.

He also made seven international appearances for La Albiceleste. After retiring, he began his managerial career as Jorge Sampaoli’s assistant at Sevilla. He followed Sampaoli to the Argentine national team.

Scaloni was appointed as the interim head coach following Sampaoli’s dismissal. His appointment was widely criticised, with the late Diego Maradona calling him “unqualified” and unable to “direct traffic”.

Despite a semi-final exit at the 2019 Copa America, the Argentine Football Association stuck with him. This decision paid dividends as he won the Copa America in 2021, beating hosts Brazil in the final. He won the 2022 Finalissima by beating Italy.

He then oversaw an incredible World Cup campaign in Qatar. Despite losing the first match against Saudi Arabia, the South American side were flawless in the latter stages. They beat France in a chaotic final to lift the trophy.

Scaloni, who became the fourth-youngest head coach to win the World Cup, added another trophy to the cabinet by leading his nation to their 16th Copa America title in 2024.
