Martinez is now considering his future at the club.
Following his explosive comments against the club’s management, Lisandro Martinez’s future at Manchester United is now reportedly uncertain. The defender’s contract at Old Trafford is about to expire, but the team has the option to extend it for an additional 12 months, until June 2028.
According to The Athletic, Martinez does not wish to stay at United any longer. The report also claims that the Red Devils are unsure about exercising their option to extend the defender’s contract. The report further added that the Argentine player would favour a move to Spain if he were to leave.
According to the report, since competing at the FIFA World Cup, Martinez has sought a new deal with better conditions, but negotiations have never really advanced.
In two different post-match interviews following Tuesday night’s 2-0 UEFA Champions League loss at Atletico Madrid, the 28-year-old accused United of lacking ambition and attacked the club’s director of football.
In a second interview with CBS Sports, Martinez reiterated his remarks to Prime Video. According to The Athletic, the defender would have said the same thing if he had five years left on his contract and wasn’t attempting to force his way out of the team.

Lisandro Martinez tried to lessen the pain of his outburst in a statement posted on social media on Wednesday night.
“After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted,” he wrote on Instagram. “Those who know me know how I live football, with passion, commitment and a huge desire to win. And when things don’t go our way, it hurts, especially when representing a club with the history and stature of Manchester United.”
“My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honours. Those high standards are part of how I see football and the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt,” Martinez continued. “When I talk about wanting more, I’m talking about the ambition we must all have as part of this club.”
“To keep growing, to become stronger and to have everything we need to compete at the highest level. These are standards we must all hold ourselves to, starting with me.”
Right now, the focus will be on United’s upcoming Premier League match against Leeds United on Sunday. It remains to be seen if Lisandro Martinez is given an outing by Michael Carrick during the fixture at Elland Road.
