Gary O’Neil is currently managing Premier League side Wolves

There has been much conjecture over the identity of the next manager of Liverpool Football Club ever since Jurgen Klopp announced his departure.

At first, it was reported that Xabi Alonso was the front-runner. The former midfield player for Liverpool then announced that he would be remaining for at least another season at Bayer Leverkusen.

The current manager of Sporting Lisbon, Ruben Amorim, then emerged as the front-runner. particularly when it was announced that he would be departing Sporting at the finale of the current campaign. However, rumours circulated yesterday claiming that West Ham United was attempting to lure the Portuguese mastermind to London as an alternative.

Fans of Liverpool have been curious as to who will win. Exclusively to DaveOCKOP, Gary O’Neil, the head coach of the Wolverhampton Wanderers, has been examined for the Liverpool position.

Even though O’Neil was interviewed for the position, this does not indicate that he is the front-runner or that he would succeed Jurgen Klopp.

The Liverpool management is considering a number of options, as many have reported, and O’Neil is now undoubtedly one of the names in the pot. It’s unclear if that goes beyond the first interview.

Since taking over Wolves in August 2023, O’Neil has done a commendable job of managing a team that many felt was headed for collapse. This came after he performed admirably in his first managerial position at Bournemouth when he was first appointed caretaker manager in 2022 following the dismissal of former boss Scott Parker.

O’Neil received high appreciation for his work at Bournemouth, a team that many believed—including Parker—was not good enough to play in the English Premier League and was going to get demoted right away. For this reason, many people were taken aback when O’Neil was fired and Andoni Iraola, a Spanish manager, took over.

For those who don’t know, O’Neil has previously worked at Liverpool as a manager. O’Neil was named Liverpool’s under-23 team’s assistant manager in 2020.

Thus, the Englishman is well-known to individuals such as Richard Hughes, who recently took over as Liverpool’s new sporting director after serving as Bournemouth’s first-team technical director during O’Neil’s tenure there as well, and Michael Edwards, whose first appointment as the club’s sporting director occurred during O’Neil’s tenure there.
