Liverpool and Atletico Madrid begin their 2026-27 Champions League tournament with a jaw-dropping League Phase clash at Anfield tonight.
This game is a rematch of last season’s first meeting, when the Reds defeated their Spanish opponents 3-2 at home, with Virgil van Dijk scoring in the 92nd minute.
Liverpool enjoyed their opening win of the Andoni Iraola tenure last Friday with a 2-0 away triumph over Ipswich Town, after rallying from behind to save a single point in consecutive 2-2 Premier League draws with Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.
Iraola is now gearing up for his first Champions League game as head coach, with six-time champions Liverpool looking to improve on last season’s quarter-final result and end an eight-year drought to secure Europe’s most coveted club title.
After racking up seven points in their first three LaLiga games of the season, Atletico Madrid’s perfect streak came to an end on Saturday with a merited 3-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao.
Simeone is, in fact, the most senior coach among clubs playing in the 2026-27 Champions League, having assumed command of Atletico in December 2011. The enthusiastic Argentine is charged with leading the two-time losing finalists, as well as last season’s semi-finalists, to their first victory in the tournament this season.
