The Cityzens compeleted a stunning comeback against the Cherries.
Manchester City took on Bournemouth in an exciting Matchday 1 fixture in the English Premier League 2026-27 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, August 23, 2026. A first-half goal from Marcus Tavernier was cancelled out by late goals from Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol in a 2-1 victory for the Cityzens.
The hosts started the match on the front foot, and Erling Haaland had a glorious opportunity to put them ahead in the match but failed to get a shot on target. The Cherries stunned the home crowd when Marcus Tavernier converted Evanilson’s ball into a wonderful goal in the 26th minute.
Justin Kluivert almost doubled the lead with a fine effort, but he was denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Despite this, the visitors went into the break with a one-goal advantage.
Manchester City came fighting in the second half, and Marc Guehi had a brilliant opportunity with a header to level the scores. However, the defender’s effort went agonisingly wide. Guehi made amends late in the match, heading the ball past Djordje Petrovic and into the back of the net in the 85th minute.
Ryan Cherki, who set up Guehi’s goal, then teed up Josko Gvardiol, who scored the winner in the 92nd minute. This strike broke the visiting fans’ hearts, salvaging a hard-fought victory for Enzo Maresca’s City.

Important things we learned from Manchester City vs Bournemouth:
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
1. Bournemouth strike against run-of-play
The opening 25 minutes or so were completely dominated by Manchester City. The hosts had two-thirds of the ball. Haaland had an opportunity after being set up by O’Reilly, but the Norwegian striker missed the easy chance. Instead of being a goal up, City found themselves a goal down after a lethal counter-attack by Bournemouth, who found the back of the net.
2. City lose the midfield battle
Enzo Maresca’s insistence on playing with three centre-backs off the ball meant that Abdukodir Khusanov came in the centre-back position, with Rico Lewis dropping to right-back. As a result, Elliot Anderson was joined by Marc Guehi in the middle of the pitch. This makeshift midfield was completely outplayed by the Cherries forwards. Anderson completed just one long ball and also failed to win any aerial duels.
No wonder City looked much more lively once Mateo Kovacic and Rayan Cherki were introduced in the second half, with the latter setting up City’s two goals.
3. Frustration for Haaland
Erling Haaland had a rare off day against the Cherries. He was almost found by a ball from O’Reilly, but somehow opted to hit it with his knee, missing it completely, instead of going for a header. A cross from Ruben Dias then found Haaland, but his header, seemingly destined for the bottom corner, was saved by Djordje Petrovic. Just before half-time, Phil Foden’s cross was headed back by Guehi, but Haaland failed to control it and get a shot away.
4. Antonio Silva announces himself
For years, Antonio Silva had been linked with a move to one of the big six clubs in the Premier League. The Portuguese centre-back raised a few eyebrows when he signed for Bournemouth, but his league debut showed that he can be a real asset to the Cherries. The young defender made the most defensive contributions in the match, keeping the City attackers quiet for large periods of the game, despite the two late goals conceded by the visitors.
5. Injury blow for Anderson
Elliot Anderson had a quiet performance in a deeper role against the Cherries, and his day became worse when he was forced off just after the hour mark with what looked like a muscle injury. The record signing grimaced with pain, holding his thigh, and he was brought off for Mateo Kovacic. Maresca will hope that the influential midfielder is fit in time to feature against Crystal Palace.
