Ayari’s goal sealed a win for the Seagulls.

Manchester City faced Brighton & Hove Albion in a Matchday 9 fixture of the English Premier League 2026-27 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, October 31, 2026. An early goal from Yasin Ayari sealed a 1-0 win for the Seagulls.

Brighton shocked the hosts early on, with Yasin Ayari scoring in the 11th minute after a cross from the right by Maxim De Cuyper. The latter had a glorious opportunity to double the lead soon after the restart, but fired his shot wide with just Gianluigi Donnarumma in front of him.

Manchester City upped the pressure in the second half in search of an equaliser. Erling Haaland and others had some good opportunities, but Bart Verbruggen and the Seagulls’ defence held firm for a crucial victory.

Five things we learned from this Premier League match:

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

1. Maresca’s defensive shuffle backfires

Following back-to-back error-laden performances, Marc Guehi was dropped to the bench. Abdukodir Khusanov was deployed in his favoured role at centre-back, while Matheus Nunes got a start at right-back.

This revamped backline looked out of sorts as Brighton pressed City. Maxim De Cuyper’s cross from the right was not dealt with by Nunes, whose attempted clearance fell to Ayari, who poked the ball into an empty net.

2. Still no luck for Ndiaye

City’s best opportunity to equalise came in the 22nd minute, with Elliot Anderson floating in a delightful ball towards the far corner. Iliman Ndiaye jumped the highest to meet the delivery, but his header went wide of the target. Minutes later, he weaved his way past Olivier Boscagli before firing a shot straight at Bart Verbruggen.

Since his £60 million move from Everton, Ndiaye has failed to score a goal in 12 appearances across all competitions. Once again given the nod on the right flank, the Senegalese international drew a blank, despite taking the joint-most shots in the clash. He was replaced by Allan in the 79th minute.

3. Bouaddi’s miserable start

Man City fans were clamouring for Ayyoub Bouaddi to be given a starting place in midfield, and Enzo Maresca obliged tonight. Instead of grabbing this opportunity with both hands, the young Moroccan put in one of the worst performances on the pitch.

He won just two of the five duels he was involved in and completed just 20 passes. He was also dispossessed three times in dangerous positions, allowing Brighton to counter. Maresca had enough and hooked him in the 55th minute, bringing on Rayan Cherki.

4. Haaland draws a blank

Erling Haaland put in a forgettable performance in the first half, having the fewest touches of all players and cutting a forlorn figure up top. As City increased their pressure at the end of the first half, Haaland had a golden chance to equalise only to be denied by a superb block from Lewis Dunk.

Haaland wasn’t the only City attacker to disappoint in the first half, with the hosts registering an xG of 0.55. He had multiple opportunities in the second half to find the equaliser, heading the ball straight at Bart Verbruggen.

Tonight marked the first time that Haaland failed to score in a match since Norway’s UEFA Nations League loss to Portugal.

5. Brighton’s defensive masterclass

The Seagulls started this clash with the third-best defensive record in the league, and their solidity at the back was on display tonight against one of the best attacks in Europe. City had a total of 19 shots, including five shots on target. They posted an xG of 1.72, which included three big chances.

Yet, the partnership of Luka Vuskovic and Lewis Dunk shielded Bart Verbruggen’s goal with everything they had. The Dutchman in goal was in exceptional form himself, pulling off seven incredible saves to deny the likes of Haaland and Ndiaye. A man-of-the-match performance from the big goalkeeper!
