The Red Devils fell to yet another league defeat tonight.
Manchester United took on Aston Villa in a Matchday 10 fixture of the English Premier League 2026-27 at Old Trafford on Sunday, November 8, 2026. The Villans secured a thrilling 4-3 win, powered by goals from Alysson, Nicolas Jackson, John McGinn, and Leon Goretzka.
It was a flying start from Aston Villa, who went two goals up inside four minutes. The first was scored by Alysson in the second minute before Nicolas Jackson doubled the visitors’ lead in the fourth minute.
Manchester United pulled one back in the 16th minute, with Bruno Fernandes scoring from the spot after Boubacar Kamara brought down Matheus Cunha in the penalty box. The Red Devils equalised in the 44th minute, with Youri Tielemans scoring against his old side.
Villa took the lead again just three minutes after the restart. Diogo Dalot fouled Alysson in the box, and the referee pointed to the spot. The resulting penalty was converted by John McGinn, putting the visitors ahead once more. Leon Goretzka then doubled Aston Villa’s lead in the 53rd minute, finding the back of the net after a goalmouth scramble.
The home side, however, refused to give up. Joshua Zirkzee pulled one back in the 92nd minute, keeping the Red Devils in the contest. Michael Carrick’s men then completed the unlikeliest of comebacks when Patrick Dorgu headed in the equaliser in the 96th minute, securing a crucial point for United.
Five things we learned from Manchester United vs Aston Villa:
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
1. What a horror start for Lammens!

Alysson struck for Aston Villa with barely 60 seconds on the clock. It was more of a disasterclass in defending from the home side. The United players were completely unaware of Alysson on the right flank, with the ball making its way to the Brazilian after some intricate play on the part of Villa.
The winger took a snap shot from the edge of the box that squeezed under the feet of Senne Lammens and found the back of the net. It was a moment to forget for the Belgian goalkeeper, who could not get his feet sorted in time.
2. Astonishing lack of reaction from United
Going behind so early should have jolted the United defenders from their slumber. Instead, it was more of the same from the home side, who went behind just three minutes later.
It came from a ball into the box, which Leny Yoro could not head far away. The ball made its way to Alysson, whose shot was saved by Lammens. However, the goalkeeper spilt it in front of him, allowing Nicolas Jackson to poke it into an empty net. Another horrible, horrible moment for Lammens.
3. Fair call for penalty?
United got a sliver of a lifeline in the 13th minute when Boubacar Kamara’s sliding challenge on Matheus Cunha was penalised by Chris Kavanagh. The French midfielder adamantly appealed that he had got to the ball first. However, replays showed that he made slight contact with Cunha’s foot before touching the ball.
That slight touch swayed the referee’s call, with the decision being confirmed by VAR. The resulting penalty was eventually converted by Bruno Fernandes, halving the home side’s deficit.
Expect Unai Emery to complain about this decision in his post-match interview, for sure.
4. Dalot struggles at left-back

With no fit left-back at his disposal, Michael Carrick was forced to once again field Diogo Dalot in that position. The Portuguese defender – naturally right-footed – struggled to create anything of note going forward in the first half, with Taylor Harwood-Bellis dealing with him well.
Dalot added to United’s misery soon after the restart, clumsily toppling Alysson over after being caught off-guard by the Brazilian’s pace. Carrick can’t wait for Luke Shaw to become available for selection.
5. Two consecutive comebacks enough for Carrick?

For a long time, it seemed like Michael Carrick was a dead man walking, with his sacking a matter of if and not when. Manchester United’s board publicly backed their under-fire head coach, and the comeback win against AS Roma gave some respite.
Tonight was a similar story. United were second-best for most of the match, but they showed incredible perseverance and character to come back from two goals down, once again, to secure a crucial draw.
However, despite the jubilant scenes at Old Trafford after the full-time whistle, questions will be asked about the home side’s performance. They struggled against a lower-calibre team at home, requiring two stoppage-time goals to rescue a draw. Furthermore, they remain in the relegation zone, something unfathomable for a club of their stature.
Surely, surely, this will not be enough for Carrick to hold on to his job when United travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool after the international break? Only time will tell.
