The Red Devils sealed a comeback win tonight.

Manchester United hosted Ipswich Town at Old Trafford for a Matchday 2 fixture of the English Premier League 2026-27 season on Sunday night. A hat-trick from Bruno Fernandes powered a 5-2 comeback victory for the hosts.

The visitors looked lively in the opening stages, and Senne Lammens had to make two big saves to keep his side in the contest. However, Ipswich Town’s counter-attacking strategy worked as Leif Davis scored in the 29th minute, converting Abdul Fatawu’s brilliant cross into the box.

Bruno Fernandes drew his side level with a goal in the 40th minute. Matheus Cunha did brilliantly to find Fernandes with a through ball, and the Portuguese midfielder beat Kjell Scherpen from a tight angle.

The hosts started the second half on the front foot, and Bryan Mbeumo missed a golden opportunity to put his side ahead. Harry Maguire’s low shot went into the bottom corner after a deflection off Jacob Greaves, with the latter credited with an own goal.

Minutes later, Cunha was brought down inside the box by Greaves, with the referee pointing to the spot. Fernandes stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake from 12 yards out, sending Scherpen the wrong way.

The Manchester United skipper completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, scoring after a shot by Mbeumo fell kindly into his path. Fernandes then set up Mbeumo in the 82nd minute, with the Cameroonian striker’s chipped effort crossing the line. This goal sealed a solid victory for the hosts, who secured their first win of the season. Chuba Akpom pulled one goal back in added time, but it was little more than consolation for the visitors.

Important things we learned from Manchester United vs Ipswich Town:

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

1. Lammens keeps deadlock intact

The hosts began the match on the front foot, but they were caught out by Ipswich Town’s pace on a couple of occasions. It was their heroic goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, who pulled off two incredible saves to keep the deadlock intact.

The first came from a counter-attack in which Julio Enciso outpaced Luke Shaw to find himself in a one-on-one situation against Lammens. However, the Belgian keeper made himself big to deny Enciso’s effort. In the 23rd minute, Lammens produced a diving save to tip Daizen Maeda’s shot behind.

2. Ipswich’s tactics bear fruit

Lammens’ heroics could not prevent Ipswich from going ahead, however, as the visitors got the breakthrough before the half-hour mark. The bulk of the credit should go to Fatawu. The Ghanaian youngster showcased quick feet to get past Shaw and play an accurate ball into the box. It fell to Davis, who let fly a rocket shot that went straight into the back of the net past the goalkeeper’s reach.

3. United attack looks unsettled

The Red Devils had several chances in the opening stages of the game, with Scherpen making a stunning save in the 13th minute to deny Diogo Dalot’s curling effort. However, much like in the game against Hull City, the Manchester United attack looked disjointed.

Marcus Rashford, Mbeumo, and Cunha did not look like they were on the same page, and there was general confusion about where the attacks would go. Michael Carrick would love a Premier League-proven No. 9 – and how!

4. Bruno Fernandes still the undisputed king

There was a lot of speculation that Manchester United were looking to sell Bruno Fernandes in the summer. It seemed like a strange decision from the Red Devils, with Fernandes not only being their skipper but also their best player by some distance.

The Portuguese maestro again showed his worth tonight. When the entire United attack was misfiring, he stepped up with a fine finish, drawing his side level. He then scored from the spot to put his side two goals ahead. He completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, scoring from close range after a miscue from Mbeumo. Fernandes added an assist to his name in the 82nd minute, setting up Mbeumo’s goal.

5. Greaves’ nightmare outing

Manchester United started the second half with blistering pace. However, their comeback was aided by a horror show from Jacob Greaves. The centre-back first diverted Maguire’s off-target shot into the bottom corner past Scherpen, putting United ahead for the first time this season. Just three minutes later, Greaves slid in behind Cunha, bringing the Brazilian down inside the penalty area, leading to Fernandes scoring from the spot.
