While everyone expected Manchester United to get all three points given the numerical advantage, Enzo Maresca’s boys punched above their weight to secure the victory after Erling Haaland’s controversial goal gave them the lead.

One common takeaway from these games was that United, against ten men, struggled to create clear goalscoring opportunities, as they seemed to have no idea what to do with more time on the ball against teams that don’t offer too much space in attack.

The problem was not the lack of possession or numerical superiority, but United’s inability to break down a compact defensive block when the opposition had little interest in committing bodies forward.

Phil Foden, the starboy of Manchester City, who has scored seven times and ended up on the winning side ten times in the Manchester Derby, was brought back into the starting XI by Enzo Maresca for the special game after the winger warmed the bench in the win against Coventry.

However, Foden’s return to the team didn’t go as planned, as he was sent off in the 23rd minute, earning the first red card of his professional career. Bruno Fernandes and Phil Foden contested a ground duel near the touchline, where the Manchester United captain stamped on and kicked Foden from behind, inviting the opposition player to get involved.

And that’s exactly what Foden did, as he swung his boot at Bruno Fernandes, kicking him in the stomach, which left Michael Oliver with no other choice but to show him a red card. While Bruno deserved a card for his actions, Foden’s reaction against someone like Bruno, who at times overreacts to challenges, was unacceptable and stupid.

3. Rashford: United’s best attacker, but lacking the finishing touch, yet again

Marcus Rashford, who has experienced a broken relationship with the Manchester United fans over the last 18–24 months, returned to the club after failing to secure a permanent move to FC Barcelona this summer. Ever since his return, Rashford has featured in every Premier League game, putting in impressive performances in each of them.

However, what has been lacking is the end product — the failure to score or register an assist in the final third. And there was no better moment for the Mancunian-born-and-bred Marcus Rashford to score his first goal since returning than an occasion like the Manchester Derby.

His combination play with Cunha and Bruno was really exciting to watch, along with his desire to track his runners back and win the ball back. However, Rashford couldn’t find the finishing touch yet again, as he failed to get his name on the scoresheet despite making a lot of dangerous runs down the left flank. His best attempt of the night was his long-range free-kick that struck the woodwork.

2. VAR: The center of controversy yet again

In big derbies and closely contested, fierce encounters between two rivals, the intensity and pace at which the game is played are usually higher than in other games, as we often see tackles and challenges flying in given the competitive nature of the fixture. In these games, referees usually take a step back and let the players on the pitch do the talking.

However, in this game, referee Michael Oliver and VAR had a highly controversial outing, as the duo made sure to take the sting out of the game early by sending Foden off. While Foden’s actions deserved a sending-off, the decision not to book Bruno Fernandes for his stamp and kick on the player was a poor one overall.

And for Manchester City’s opener, there was confusion all over the pitch and among fans across the globe, as it initially looked like Erling Haaland’s goal had rightly been ruled out. However, the decision was overturned after VAR found that Enzo had no touch on the ball and Haaland was onside when Gvardiol’s cross deflected off a Manchester United defender. And to add on just five minutes at the end, disgraceful.

Will VAR maintain the same consistency in its decisions in the upcoming match weeks? You wouldn’t think so!

1. Enzo Maresca’s boys pass the mentality test yet again

More than the win in the Manchester Derby and the three points in the bag, what would have pleased Enzo Maresca the most is the mentality and character his boys displayed on the pitch despite playing with just ten men for more than an hour of the game.

Despite the numerical disadvantage and the fact that they were playing at a ground where they are not welcomed at all, Manchester City’s players displayed brilliant courage to hold their nerves, get the basics right and secure all three points. It is always relatively easier when you have a striker like Erling Haaland, who just needs one opportunity to deliver.

Right from the opening game, they have shown immense character and a willingness to fight on the pitch. The comeback win against Bournemouth, the defensive solidity at Coventry and the resilience shown by the ten men at Old Trafford – Enzo Maresca would certainly be a happy man as he knows these are the type of performances he would want his side to put if they want to challenge Arsenal for the title.
