The two clubs face off in the Premier League on Monday.

Manchester United host Liverpool in gameweek 3 of the Premier League on Monday. As always it is one of the most anticipated matches in the English league calendar. Both clubs did meet in pre-season, with Manchester United winning that match by a 4-0 margin. To add more flames to the fire, both clubs have had a horrible start to their 2022-23 Premier League campaign. The Red Devils come into the game off the back of two successive humiliating defeats in the league.

While Jurgen Klopp's men have only managed to draw their first two league fixtures. Last season Liverpool beat Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford and it was the start of the downfall of Ole Gunnar Solskjær's reign. While during the 2020–21 season, the clash at Old Trafford had to be postponed due to a stadium invasion and subsequent pitch invasion by the Manchester United fans protesting against the Glazer ownership.

This season yet again, Manchester United fans are planning a walkout of the match against Liverpool in protest against the current owners. Taking all the points and situation into notice, it looks set to be another firey contest between the two long-standing rivals.

Injury and Team News

Anthony Martial has returned to training but is still a major doubt ahead of the Liverpool clash. Victor Lindelof has also returned to training but is again a major doubt for Monday. Young winger Facundo Pellistri is ruled out because of an injury. While young right-back Ethan Laird has joined EFL Championship side QPR on loan. New star signing Casemiro could be present in the Old Trafford stands for the clash. But as things stand there is next to no chance for the Brazilian to make his debut against Liverpool

While for Liverpool, club record signing Darwin Nunez is out after picking up a three-game ban for headbutting Joachim Andersen in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace. Jurgen Klopp confirmed that centre-half Joel Matip is out for at least two weeks with a muscle strain. Roberto Firmino could be back in the starting lineup after missing the last game as a precaution. Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson could also be back in the starting XI after being on the bench for the 1-1 draw last time around. Ibrahima Konate, Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Diogo Jota are all ruled out due to injury.

Players To Watch

Mohamed Salah

The Egyptian superstar scored a hat-trick in the 5-0 win at Old Trafford last season. With the Red Devil's horrible record at the back this season, Salah will be looking to take full advantage and add a few more goals to his name.

Raphaël Varane

Reports suggest that Erik ten Hag is set to drop Harry Maguire against the Reds and Varane is set to start in the heart of the defence. The French centre-half struggled with constant injuries in his first season at the club. But this could be the perfect time for the World Cup winner to step up and properly introduce himself to the Manchester United fans.

Manchester United predicted lineup:

De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Malacia; Fred, McTominay, Fernandes; Sancho, Ronaldo, Rashford

Liverpool predicted lineup:

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Keita, Henderson; Salah, Diaz, Firmino

Manchester United vs Liverpool Prediction

Both the teams have had a horrible start to the new season. Both Jurgen Klopp and Erik ten Hag will be looking to make a statement of intent and get their campaigns back on track. United will look to play on the counter-attack and defend as a unit. While Liverpool will be looking to take the game to United and create a lot of goals scoring opportunities. That being said, there is a likelihood of a few goals from both sides.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool
