Manchester United have returned to the Champions League after a two-year hiatus, and their league phase campaign will begin against debutant team Sabah.
The visitors will be the second Azerbaijani team to compete in this league, following Qarabağ, which was created in 2017. They won their first national championship last season and were required to undergo the gauntlet this summer to clinch a league phase berth.
Sabah had to go through three qualifying rounds and a playoff with Hapoel Be’er Sheva to get there, and Old Trafford is a fitting venue for the novices to make their debut.
Given Manchester United’s recent absence from Europe’s top competition, the Theatre of Dreams will be full of expectation tonight. The Red Devils will try to do themselves credit on the greatest platform after finishing third in the Premier League last season.
Michael Carrick faces the difficult burden of contending on numerous fronts in 2026-27, which he was not faced with as interim manager, and United have not begun the new season well.
Four points from their first three Premier League games may not appear to be a disaster, but United have played against inferior opponents, and there is certainly room for improvement.
