Gilberto Mora of Mexico made history. He became the second-youngest player in FIFA World Cup history to start a knockout game. He was in Mexicoâs starting lineup for the round of 32 encounter against Ecuador at the Mexico City stadium.
At 17 years and 259 days, he is second only to Brazilian great Pele. The latter was 17 years and 239 days when he started in the quarterfinals against Wales in the 1958 quadrennial tournament.
Gilberto Mora is an offensive midfielder who represents the Liga MX team, Tijuana. He made his international debut at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2025, making him the youngest player to do so.
He also made history as the youngest Mexican to play in the World Cup, coming off the bench in the co-hostâs first game against South Africa.

Moreover, his start against Ecuador was a decision that nearly paid dividends immediately at the Azteca Stadium. The teenager blasted an attempt from distance and then put a beautiful curled effort a whisker wide of the far post, both within the opening 16 minutes.
Despite this, Mexico won comfortably 2-0 thanks to a strong team effort.
