Mexico vs England - All-time head-to-head record ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026

England boasts a commanding record over Mexico ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has reached the Round of 16, with the remaining teams now just three victories away from lifting football’s biggest prize. Every knockout fixture carries enormous significance, and one of the standout ties sees co-hosts Mexico take on England at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
El Tri booked their place in the last 16 with an impressive 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32, while England came from behind to defeat DR Congo 2-1 and continue their unbeaten run in the tournament. History, however, favours the Three Lions, who have enjoyed considerable success in previous meetings between the two nations.
Mexico and England have faced each other nine times in senior international football. England have won six of those encounters, while Mexico have emerged victorious on two occasions. The remaining match ended in a draw. Their rivalry stretches back to 1959 and includes just one competitive fixture, with the other eight meetings coming in friendly matches.

Mexico vs England: All Previous meetings between both the teams
The first meeting between the two nations took place in Mexico City on 24 May 1959. Playing in front of their home supporters, Mexico secured a memorable 2-1 victory to open the rivalry on a positive note. It remains one of only two wins El Tri have managed against the Three Lions.
England responded emphatically two years later in 1961 with one of the most dominant victories in the history of the fixture. Bobby Charlton inspired the hosts with a hat-trick as the Three Lions dismantled Mexico 8-0, handing El Tri their heaviest defeat against England and establishing a commanding presence in the rivalry.
The only competitive meeting between the two sides came during the group stage of the 1966 FIFA World Cup. England secured a crucial 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Bobby Charlton and Roger Hunt. The win proved significant in England’s historic campaign, which ultimately ended with the Three Lions lifting the World Cup for the first and only time.
Three years later in 1969 the teams met in an international friendly that failed to produce a goal. Despite opportunities at both ends, neither side could break the deadlock as the match finished 0-0, the only draw in the history of the fixture.
In 1985 Mexico claimed their second victory over England in the Ciudad de Mexico Cup Tournament. A disciplined performance on home soil saw El Tri edge Sir Bobby Robson’s side 1-0, ending England’s unbeaten run against the hosts and recording what remains Mexico’s most recent victory in the fixture.
The following year in 1986, England quickly gained revenge with a convincing 3-0 win in a pre-World Cup friendly. The Three Lions controlled proceedings throughout the contest and comfortably restored their dominance over the CONCACAF nation.
After more than a decade without meeting, the nations renewed acquaintances in 1997. Robbie Fowler and Teddy Sheringham both found the back of the net as England secured a routine 2-0 victory, extending their winning run against Mexico.
England produced another outstanding attacking display in Derby four years later in 2001. Paul Scholes, Robbie Fowler, David Beckham and Teddy Sheringham all got on the scoresheet as the Three Lions cruised to a comprehensive 4-0 victory over El Tri.
The most recent meeting came at Wembley Stadium in May 2010. Ledley King opened the scoring before Peter Crouch doubled England’s advantage. Guillermo Franco briefly gave Mexico hope with a goal before Glen Johnson sealed a 3-1 victory for Fabio Capello’s side, ensuring England entered the 2010 FIFA World Cup on a positive note.
