Mikel Arteta agrees new deal to extend contract as Arsenal manager - Report

The Spanish head coach led the Gunners to the league title last season.

Mikel Arteta has reportedly agreed to a new, better deal with Premier League winners Arsenal.

The Spaniard’s current contract ends at the end of the season. Negotiations about a new agreement have been continuing for some months.

Earlier this month, BBC Sport reported that all sides were close to reaching an agreement. It is currently thought that Arteta has reached a definitive deal with Arsenal to prolong his stay at the club.

The duration of his new contract has not been confirmed, but it is expected to carry him into at least his 10th year at the club after his arrival in December 2019.

The new deal would also include a significant pay boost above his existing annual compensation of £10 million, as well as an extra £5 million in bonuses.

Speaking about his contract negotiations, Arteta revealed last week: “They [the fans] don’t have to worry about any of that because I want to be here. I’m extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with.”

Mikel Arteta led Arsenal to their first league title since 2004 in May. They beat Manchester City 3-0 to win the FA Community Shield last month. During his time here, he also won the FA Cup.

Even so, winning the UEFA Champions League is still the main goal. Last year, Arsenal almost won it all. But in the final, they lost to Paris Saint-Germain after extra time.

Meanwhile, this campaign, they will have similar objectives: to defend the league title and lift their first-ever Champions League trophy.
