Mohammedan SC sign defender Asheer Akhtar on loan from East Bengal
The 25-year-old has also previously played for Bengaluru FC in the AFC Cup.
Second Division League outfit Mohammedan Sporting Club have signed defender Asheer Akhtar on a one-year loan deal, the club has announced.
"Mohammedan Sporting Club Official is delighted to announce the signing of former Bengaluru FC and East Bengal central defender Asheer Akhtar on a one-year contract! His inclusion will strengthen the squad," the club statement said. The defender will remain with the club till the end of the upcoming 2020-21 season.
The 25-year-old plied his trade with East Bengal in the 2019-20 season. He had one more year left in his contract with the Red and Gold, which he will now spend with Mohammedan on loan.
Asheer Akhtar began his career with FC Pune's youth team. He later entered senior football when he signed for Lonestar Kashmir in 2015. The following year, Salgaocar signed him before he went on to make his I-League debut at Mumbai FC in 2016-17. In 2017, he moved to Bengaluru FC and was initially slotted with their reserves before earning a promotion to their first team in 2018. Although he could not make an appearance for them in the ISL, he went on to play for them twice in the AFC Cup.
East Bengal came calling for Asheer Akhtar ahead of the 2019-20 season, where he went on to make eight appearances for them in the I-League. He also scored his maiden goal against Indian Arrows, in a match which East Bengal won 3-1.
