The Black Panthers are bolstering their squad ahead of the I-League season.
Mohammedan Sporting are set to sign striker Philip Adjah and midfielder Alwyn George to their squad, Khel Now understands. Adjah returns to the club after finding his breakthrough in Indian football with the Black Panthers in 2018.
George has been a mainstay in Indian football for almost a decade now, with the Tata Football Academy graduate bringing a ton of experience to Mohammedan Sporting. The 28-year-old has played in both the I-League and Indian Super League (ISL) over the years, but have fallen out of favour in recent seasons.
The former Indian international has the reputation for being a dynamic midfielder, who can contribute on both sides of the pitch and bring another dimension to his team. Mohammedan Sporting will hope that George rediscovers his form from back in the 2015 I-League season, when he played a role over helping Bengaluru FC win the title.
While George is expected to be used in a more rotational role, Adjah will be primed to earn back his position marshalling the frontline for the Black Panthers. After Mohammedan Sporting let go of Willis Plaza after earning qualification for the I-League, they have replaced him with the Ghanaian striker after watching him excel in the competition last season.
Adjah had a short loan spell with NEROCA FC last season, where he scored nine goals in as many games for them – including a stunning hattrick to help them defeat Punjab FC in March. The 22-year-old striker also played for Bhawanipore FC in the I-League qualifiers, scoring a couple of goals and helping them manage to finish behind champions Mohammedan Sporting.
The Black Panthers will hope that Adjah rediscovers his brilliant goal-scoring form which he showcased after arriving in Kolkata. He scored against both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in the 2018 Calcutta Football League and in his first stint, he netted 31 goals in 30 games for the Black Panthers.
The agile, clinical striker will be key to winning games for Mohammedan – who are hoping to take one step closer to win the I-League title next season. With the addition of a striker like Adjah and an experienced, robust midfielder like George – it could well be a possibility.
