Leicester City Vs Bengaluru FC: Build-up
The NextGen Cup is part of the collaboration between the Premier League and the Indian Super League (ISL). The tournament is set up with the aim of providing an opportunity for young footballers to play at international standards and conditions.
The Next Generation Cup, 2022 features eight teams. Five Premier League academy teams along with two Indian clubs and one South African team. Teams have been divided into two groups and play their first match on July 27 in London and the Midlands.
Bengaluru FC and Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in Group A of the competition. Bengaluru FC qualified to compete in the international tournament by virtue of finishing as the champions of the inaugural Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) held earlier this year. The Blues remained undefeated throughout the competition with Rahul Raju ending as the top-scorer of the event with seven goals to his name. Unfortunately, the lad has been excluded from the side for the Next Gen Cup. The reason, as per rumours, is his probable move to a different ISL club. However, the club will feature Bekey Oram who became the best player of the tournament.
Although fellow Indian side, Kerala Blasters fielded a few senior team players, Bengaluru FC have refrained from doing the same. All their players are from their developmental team. No one from the Indian Super League squad has been included.
