Tottenham Hotspur Vs Kerala Blasters: Build-up
The NextGen Cup is part of the collaboration between the Premier League and the Indian Super League (ISL). The tournament is set up with the aim of providing an opportunity for young footballers to play at international standards and conditions.
The Next Generation Cup, 2022 features eight teams. Five Premier League academy teams along with two Indian clubs and one South African team. Teams have been divided into two groups and play their first match on July 27 in London and the Midlands.
Kerala Blasters and Tottenham Hotspur youth team are placed in London Group B alongside West Ham United and Crystal Palace. Kerala Blasters, like Bengaluru FC, qualified to compete in the international tournament by virtue of finishing in the top two in the inaugural Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) held earlier this year.
The Blasters enter the tournament with U-21 and two U-23 players. The team also includes players chosen from the Academy that’s run by the Club and Sports Kerala Foundation, Government of Kerala. First-team stars such as Jeakson Singh, Ayush Adhikari, Hormipam Ruivah, and Bijoy Varghese have also been included in the KBFC squad for the tournament in the UK.
All four were part of the Kerala Blasters team that finished as runners-up last season in ISL 2021-22. KBFC are, however, without Vincy Barretto who finished the RFDL as the team’s highest goalscorer with three goals.
