On September 5th, Elversberg defeated Monchengladbach, one of Germany’s top teams, 4-3. On the day of this incredible performance, the Bundesliga squad also helped Nicholas Mickelson shatter a 47-year-old Thai football record.
Nicholas Mickelson replaced Lasse Gunther in the 75th minute. Mickelson officially debuted in the Bundesliga, becoming the first Thai player to do so since 1979.
The first Thai player to play in Germany’s premier division was the great Witthaya Laohakul. The 72-year-old former midfielder spent two campaigns with Hertha Berlin, making 31 appearances.
Nicholas Mickelson’s recent progress is a step toward reclaiming his starting spot at left-back at Elversberg. Looking ahead, it also boosts his confidence in returning to the Thai national squad. Thailand face Vietnam in the FIFA ASIAN Cup 2026 in early October.

Nicholas Mickelson, a 27-year-old professional footballer, operates at right-back and left-back for the German Bundesliga club SV Elversberg and the Thailand national team. He was born and raised in Skien, Norway, to a Norwegian father and a Thai mother. He plays for the Thailand national team professionally.
He started his senior professional career in Norway, making 54 games with HamKam. He later joined the Danish Superliga team, establishing himself as a major defensive presence in 95 games.
His significant transfer came to the Bundesliga club when he signed a two-year contract that runs through June 2027. In his first season in 2025-26, he made 25 league games, assisting the squad in achieving a historic promotion to the Bundesliga. He made his Bundesliga debut as a substitute on September 5, 2026, in a 4-3 away win over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
After representing Norway at various youth levels, he made the decision to transfer his allegiance to his mother’s native country. He debuted for the Thailand U23 squad in 2022 before moving up to the senior Thailand national team.
He has subsequently gained more than 30 senior caps, appearing in major events such as the AFC Asian Cup and the ASEAN Championship.
