NorthEast United sign ex-East Bengal & Mohun Bagan striker VP Suhair

The 28-year-old was part of Kibu Vicuna's team which won the I-League in the 2019-20 season.

Indian Super League (ISL) outfit NorthEast United have completed the signing of former East Bengal and Mohun Bagan striker VP Suhair, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

"VP Suhair is a Highlander! The last season's I-League winner joins the NEUFC Family," the club statement read. Khel Now understands that the player has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Highlanders, after initially attracting interest from Kerala Blasters as well.

VP Suhair started playing football during his school days. His earliest claim to fame happened in his third year with the University team, when he became the top scorer at the all-India level. He began his professional career at State Bank of Travancore and went on to play for United SC, East Bengal and Gokulam Kerala, appearing in a total of over 40 I-League matches till 2019.

The 28-year-old's career then had a turning point in the 2019-20 season, as he signed for Mohun Bagan. Under their then-head coach Kibu Vicuna, Suhair started every match in the I-League in 2019-20, scoring two goals and helping Mohun Bagan to win the league after a gap of five years.

"Last season with Mohun Bagan was very good. I played almost all the games and many tournaments. I used to play No 10 or No 9. Kibu (Vicuna) helped me play in the role of a winger as well. He is very supportive. If there are mistakes, he will let you know how to correct them," he told Goal in an interview earlier this year.

VP Suhair is the third signing of NorthEast United this season. Earlier in September, they had announced that they have roped in Mauritanian midfielder Khassa Camara and Portuguese winger Luis Machado, while Federico Gallego extended his contract by another year.

Under the new head coach Gerard Nus, the Highlanders would be keen to put an end to their memories of a lowly ninth place finish during the 2019-20 season.
