Paraguay will meet France on July 5 (IST).

The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash between Paraguay and France brings together one of the tournament’s surprise packages and one of the pre-tournament favourites. Paraguay stunned many by progressing from a difficult group and then knocking out Germany on penalties in the Round of 32. Meanwhile, France comfortably advanced through the group stage before defeating Sweden in the early knockout round.

France possess attacking depth across the pitch. Meanwhile, Paraguay have built their campaign on defensive organisation, physicality and discipline. Several individual battles across the field could ultimately decide who advances to the quarter-finals.

Here are the five player battles to watch out for in Paraguay vs France:

5. Miguel Almirón vs Theo Hernández

This could be one of the fastest battles on the pitch. Almirón remains Paraguay’s primary outlet on the counterattack. His pace could be crucial against France’s high defensive line.

Theo Hernández is among the most attack-minded full-backs in international football and regularly provides width in the final third. His forward runs could leave space for Almirón to exploit in transition. It makes this duel particularly important tactically.

The results of these one-on-one matchups will most certainly impact which country will qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals.

4. Michael Olise vs Junior Alonso

Olise offers France creativity from wide areas. He has the ability to create chances with his delivery and close control. His ability to drift inside and operate between defenders adds another dimension to the French attack.

Alonso will most likely mark Olise. He will have to keep his foe’s effect on the game down when they are going head-to-head.

3. Julio Enciso vs Aurélien Tchouaméni

Enciso is the primary source of creativity in Paraguay’s side, as well as its greatest threat; their natural flair and tendency for attacking down the side make him an integral part of how Paraguay create attacking opportunities.

Tchouaméni provides balance to the French midfield. He does so by ball recoveries, positional discipline and distribution. Winning this midfield duel could determine which side controls possession and transitions.

2. Kylian Mbappé vs Gustavo Gómez

France’s captain and primary attacking threat will likely spend much of the game operating against Paraguay’s defensive leader. Mbappé’s pace, movement and finishing ability make him one of the most dangerous forwards in world football.

Paraguay’s defence features veteran defender, aerial dominator, and highly physical player, Gómez. His job will be to limit the amount of space available to the French forward during both transition plays and inside the box.

1. Mike Maignan vs Orlando Gill

In a knockout match where margins between victories and losses will likely be narrow, goalkeepers may have a large impact on the outcome of the game. Maignan continues to be regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in Europe. He assists in the way that allows France to play out from the back.

Gill has become one of the best-performing players of the tournament for Paraguay. He was instrumental in helping Paraguay qualify for the knockout round. He provided some key saves during their penalty shootout victory against Germany.
