Patrick Berg found the back of the net in just the third minute of tonight’s match.

Norway took on Brazil in their Round of 16 clash in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 5. The Vikings thought they had taken the lead early in the match, with Patrick Berg scoring. However, the goal was quickly ruled out.

The Scandinavian side were the slight underdogs in tonight’s match. They finished second in the group with two wins from three games. They beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in the Round of 32, with Erling Haaland scoring his fifth goal of the tournament.

Facing the Selecao, the Vikings will need to be at their very best to have a shot at qualifying for the quarter-finals. The forward line of Antonio Nusa, Alexander Sorloth, and Haaland has been in good form in the tournament and will be key tonight.

Why was Patrick Berg’s goal ruled out?

The goal itself was a brilliant team move. The ball was played to Alexander Sorloth on the right, whose inch-perfect cross found Berg making a well-timed run. The Bodo/Glimt midfielder slotted it beautifully into the top-right corner.

However, the celebrations were short-lived as the linesman immediately put his flag up for offside. Replays showed that Sorloth was offside by a metre when the ball was played to him. As a result, the goal was disallowed.

Brazil could not capitalise on the disallowed goal, as Bruno Guimaraes saw a penalty saved by Orjan Nyland in the 12th minute. As a result, the deadlock remained intact in the match.
