Portugal announce 25-man squad for September-October Nations League fixtures.

Portugal are preparing for a new phase after a disappointing end to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. The national team will now begin a fresh cycle under a new manager. The upcoming international window provides the first opportunity to assess the direction of the side.

The 2016 European champions have four Nations League fixtures scheduled across the September and October international window. The opening match will also mark the beginning of a new managerial era for the Portuguese side.

With a strong core of established players and several younger options, Portugal’s latest selection squad will compete in the next stage of the Nations League.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been included in Jorge Jesus’ first national team squad. The 72-year-old coach took charge of the national team in July following Roberto Martinez’s departure.

The 41-year-old Ronaldo remains Portugal’s captain despite previously suggesting that the coming year could be the final stage of his playing career. He also confirmed in July that the 2026 World Cup would be his last.

Jesus made it clear that Ronaldo’s reputation will not guarantee him a place in the starting XI. The new manager said selection would be based on performance, stressing that the forward would be treated like every other player despite his five Ballon d’Or awards.

Portugal enter the Nations League as the defending champions. Meanwhile, Jesus begins his tenure with a squad that combines experienced internationals with younger players. Ronaldo’s inclusion ensures that the veteran captain remains part of the team as they begin their next cycle.

Portugal squad for September-October international window:

Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa, Rui Silva, Samuel Soares

Defenders: Gonçalo Inácio, João Cancelo, Diogo Dalot, Nuno Tavares, Nuno Mendes, Renato Veiga, Rúben Dias, Tomás Araújo

Midfielders: Bruno Fernandes, João Palhinha, João Neves, Rúben Neves, Vitinha, Bernardo Silva

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Fábio Silva, Francisco Trincão, Francisco Conceição, Gonçalo Ramos, João Félix, Pedro Neto, Rafael Leão

Who is Portugal’s new head coach?

Jorge Jesus is the new head coach of the national team, replacing Roberto Martínez.
