Portugal just won one of their three group-stage games at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After the successful conclusion of the group stages, the FIFA World Cup has finally entered its knockout stage. For the first time in history, qualified nations will compete in a round of 32 to determine the top 16 teams in the competition. One of the headline fixtures of this stage will be an encounter between Portugal and Croatia.

Portugal have been impressive overall under the tutelage of Roberto Martinez as they defeated Germany and Spain to win the 2025 Nations League title. However, Portugal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign have been underwhelming.

They drew 1-1 with DR Congo in their opening game. Portugal bounced back with a convincing 5-0 win against Uzbekistan but were outplayed by Colombia in a 0-0 draw during their last group phase fixture.

Croatia, on the other hand, have been one of the most consistent teams in this tournament in recent years. They qualified for their first-ever final in 2018 and won the bronze medal in 2022. Croatia’s 2026 FIFA World Cup started with a 4-2 loss against England. They won 1-0 and 2-1 against Panama and Ghana, respectively, in their next two games.

In this article, we will take a look at some key players from both sides who are expected to step up in this clash.

5. Nuno Mendes (Portugal)

Nuno Mendes is a physical specimen and can decide a game on his own. He has been a crucial part of PSG’s back-to-back UEFA Champions League victories and is regarded as the best left back in the world by many fans. He is explosive and can cause trouble for any team at any given moment. He is also a solid defender who can neutralise threats from the wing and central channels.

4. Ivan Perišić (Croatia)

Ivan Perišić is playing his club football for PSV Eindhoven and still remains a critical part of Croatia’s international squad. He is versatile and can make an impact on both wings. His off-the-ball work is commendable despite him being 37. He holds the record for the most goal contributions by a Croatian player at major international tournaments, having registered five goals and seven assists across his 20 FIFA World Cup appearances.

3. Bruno Fernandes (Portugal)

Bruno Fernandes had a historic 2025/26 season with Manchester United, breaking the all-time Premier League assist record. He is Portugal’s main creative outlet and is extremely productive in the final third. He has already created five chances for his teammates and even assisted Cristiano Ronaldo’s second goal against Uzbekistan. Bruno Fernandes is most likely to step up in Portugal’s upcoming knockout games.

2. Luka Modric (Croatia)

Luka Modric is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time. He has won almost everything there is to win in his career. However, despite his multiple UEFA Champions League wins and a headline-making Ballon d’Or victory, his work with the national team makes him stand out amongst other all-time midfielders. He led Croatia to its first-ever World Cup final and even won a bronze medal with them during the 2022 edition of the tournament.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

There is no surprise in Cristiano Ronaldo topping this list. Goals are the most important thing in football, and he is the only proven goalscorer in Portugal’s national team. Despite being 41, Ronaldo is still going strong and already has two goals to his name in this World Cup. Cristiano has faced Croatia multiple times and has scored three goals against them.
