Both teams are undefeated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far

After the successful conclusion of the group stages and the Round of 32, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has some noteworthy Round of 16 fixtures, and Portugal vs Spain is one of them. This encounter between them is expected to be close, as both teams have played brilliantly in the tournament so far.

Portugal started their campaign on a disappointing note as they were held to a 0-0 draw against the DR Congo. Their following game was a convincing 5-0 win over Uzbekistan. Portugal’s last group stage fixture ended in a 0-0 draw against Colombia. They faced Croatia in the Round of 32 and scored in the additional time to secure a 2-1 win and qualify for the last 16.

Spain, on the other hand, had a similar start to their World Cup campaign, as Cape Verde held them to a 0-0 draw. However, they bounced back with two back-to-back wins against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, clinching the top spot in Group H for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They faced Austria in the Round of 32 and secured a convincing 3-0 win.

In this article, we will look at the five key battles to watch in the game between Portugal and Spain.

5. Bruno Fernandes vs Rodri

Bruno Fernandes had a historic campaign with Manchester United, breaking the all-time assist record. He has already made an assist at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is the team’s main creative outlet.

He will be directly competing with Rodri, as the Spaniard usually plays as an anchorman, shielding the back line. The winner of this face-off will decide which team will create more chances throughout the game.

4. Vitinha vs Pedri

The fourth entry on our list is a contest between two midfield maestros, with Vitinha and Pedri battling for control of the game. Both are technically gifted and act as the engine of their respective teams. Spain usually operates with a double pivot, which gives Portugal’s three-man midfield a numerical advantage. Vitinha has yet to leave a mark at this World Cup, and Pedri has outperformed him so far.

3. Renato Veiga vs Mikel Oyarzabal

Mikel Oyarzabal is the most productive Spanish attacker in this World Cup so far. He has scored four goals in the tournament already, with two coming against Austria in the Round of 32.

He is Spain’s go-to guy to score crucial goals, as he also scored the match-winner during the 2024 Euros. Renato Veiga, on the other hand, has effortlessly replaced Pepe in Portugal’s backline, as he had a fantastic performance against Croatia.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo vs Aymeric Laporte

Cristiano Ronaldo finally ended his drought and scored his first World Cup knockout goal against Croatia. He has scored three goals in the tournament already and will look to add to his tally against Spain.

Ronaldo scored a fantastic hat-trick against La Roja in the 2018 FIFA World Cup as well. However, facing a defender of Aymeric Laporte’s quality will be a challenge even for him. Getting past him is extremely difficult for any attacker, as he dominates both ground and aerial duels.

1. Nuno Mendes vs Lamine Yamal

Topping our list is an unmissable clash between two of the best players in their respective positions. Spain’s Lamine Yamal is the new superstar of world football and is an incredible right winger. He will be up against Nuno Mendes in this game, who is arguably the best left back in the world.

Both of them have faced each other numerous times recently, with Nuno coming out on top in most occasions. However, Lamine Yamal will look to get the better of him in the biggest clash yet between the two.
