Jose Mourinho unsure of Manchester United's title future, hopes rivals get hit by FFP sanctions

The Red Devils boss expressed that it has become increasingly difficult to match the financial prowess of Manchester City and PSG.

It’s been a disastrous season for Manchester United in the Premier League so far as they currently stand eighth in the table, 18 points below their local rivals and current league leaders Manchester City. The Red Devils haven’t managed to find a single win in their last four games in the league which shows their poor form.

Although the side is doing well elsewhere in the Champions League as they have qualified for the knockout stages, their performances have certainly been below par. Manager Jose Mourinho has constantly faced criticism from fans as well as the pundits and has also been involved in several controversies since the start of the season.

However, the Portuguese brought in a whole new perspective to the matter as he spoke to the media recently. Pep Guardiola’s City are currently under scrutiny after reports from Football Leaks suggested that the club had inflated their sponsorship income in order to comply with the the break-even rules of the UEFA. If proven guilty, City might face a ban from playing in European competitions.

Speaking on United’s future, Mourinho said, “I don’t know. It depends on the way of our evolution but also the evolution of others, the ones that are above us.”

“If they keep going in the same direction and if their ambition, investment everything continues, that’s one thing. Another thing is if they stop or the Financial Fair Play (FFP) makes them stop. Then we can close the gap a little bit better.”

On the other hand, Guardiola has openly welcomed whatever investigations the club will face regarding the violation of the FFP rules. Also, it cannot be determined as to how Mourinho has linked United’s form to City’s off-the-pitch issues.

The 55 year-old, has spent as much as £360 million on transfers since his appointment in 2016 but is yet to find stability in his starting lineup as also expressed before by Rio Ferdinand, former United defender. Mourinho insists that United stand no chance in the market if not for the crazy numbers. He also went on to confirm that no one from his squad has asked as of yet to leave Old Trafford in the upcoming January transfer window.

The Red Devils face Claudio Ranieri’s  Fulham side at home on Saturday as they desperately look to get themselves back to winning ways in the League.
