Former Charlton Athletic player found dead on railway track in Chhattisgarh

The 31-year-old has also represented his country in the 2009 African Nations Football Championship.

Former Charlton Athletic man Aboubacar Mé Diomandé was found dead on railway tracks on the Mumbai-Howrah route in Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh. The Ivory Coast player was said to be travelling to Kolkata to join his teammates after having been granted a visa in July to play football in India, reports PTI.

Aboubacar was a versatile midfielder who could play in many different positions. He started his career in his native before moving to Charlton Athletic, from where he was loaned to Belgian club Germinal Beerschot. The African then moved back to his country to play for Stella Club d'Adjame, a club he represented for seven seasons.

The player was without a club since 2014 after he left Stella Club d'Adjame. The 31-year-old midfielder has also represented the national team and has even gone on to captain them in the 2009 African Nations Football Championship.

The player's mutilated body was recovered from the tracks near Baradwar railway station. According to Sub-divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Champa area Udyan Behar, the player was identified through the mobile recovered near his body. The police were able to identify the player through the identification documents which were in the mobile.

After investigation, the police concluded that the player would have landed in the country on August 8 and was travelling to join his new teammates in Kolkata.

The further conclusions detail the midfielder to have fallen from a running train. Behar and his team are yet to discover which train he was travelling in. The police tried to look for missing bags from the trains at Howrah station, but weren't successful in finding any. Nobody has yet come to claim the body of the player after the police contacted his family and friends.

The Embassy of Ivory Coast in New Delhi are yet to respond after having been informed about the accident by the police. "It was not clear by which train he was travelling," Behar said.

"We have contacted his friends in Delhi and have also spoken to his brother and informed him about the incident," the officer said.
